Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 23rd August 2024; the late summer bank holiday edition...over to...
"Hello everyone - it's good to be back in Blighty.
MC Tim commented on a spooky RPM coincidence last week (he and I choosing three linked song titles in the same week), but an even spookier coincidence slipped through his net.(*Not entirely...) I had chosen 'Go Now' by the Moody Blues as one of my three songs, and I was gobsmacked to see that Tony had chosen the very same song, albeit a much classier version by Bessie Banks."
(*I'd had Friday night out at the Alabama 3 gig in York and was rather tired by the time I got back home at 12.45am, so I didn't complete putting the edition together until early Saturday morning. I'd noticed the two choices having the same title, but wishing for RPM earlybirds to have something to listen to whilst munching their cornflakes, I decided speed was of the essence and therefore didn't do an aural comparison before publishing to ascertain if it was the same song (I'm not familiar with either artist's back catalogues, either). As I've mentioned before, I never usually listen to what folks have chosen when I'm compiling a new edition, anyway, so my suspicion this was the same song wasn't confirmed until I sat down with a beverage to listen to Week 33 in full on Sunday afternoon. The extra spookiness of the week then became apparent and a comment was going to be made this week...but you've beaten me to it.
Btw, I'm sure this has happened before....Tim)
"Anyway, here's my offering for Week 34."
In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Newton Faulkner -
Jupiter by Benjamin Clementine
Get Myself Arrested by Gomez - "Nina chose a Gomez number back in Week 14, so I thought I'd wait a bit to include this fab track."

"Making a decision between which tracks to post this week is a very, very hard task. To be honest it is almost making a monkey out of me! This week has all been about the rhythm that seems to have disappeared from modern blues. Big Bill used it commonly as did all sorts of jump and hokum artists and was still around when Muddy was recording - check out his version of Memphis Minnie's What's The Matter With The Mill' (Things might have been different if Zeppelin had ripped that off instead of stealing Minnie's 'When The Levee Breaks!')
I did notice while putting this together that a couple of tracks had another theme in common... and it is so easy to get distracted. But I shall try to stay true to my original principals (unless...)"
Is That A Monkey You Got? by Jazz Gillum -
She Want To Sell My Monkey by Tampa Red -
God Knows I Can't Help It by John Henry Barbee -

Straight Forward by Mama's Boys - "Released in 1982, Plug It In exhibited true NWOBHM spirit and, in my book, still stands the test of time. So here's another favourite..."
