Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 1st November 2024. This week it's the Halloween edition...over to...
"Looking back through the admittedly rather haphazard list of tracks that I have posted in the past, I am astounded that I haven’t found any evidence that I have chosen any of these recordings before. There have been times, including some quite recently when each of the following have been on constant replay….
Those of you who already know them will be aware of the obvious link between them and those that don’t probably won’t care but it is well worth checking out Del McCoury’s fabulous version of Vincent… (Don’t panic There’s no ‘Starry Starry Nights’ involved) ’52. Perhaps the first and last featured at an Elsing ‘big night out’ but it seems as if I have lived with all three rolling around in my head since men were standing stones on end to intrigue and confound their descendants…"
The Revolution Starts Now by Steve Earle -
Dark Hollow by Del McCoury and David Grisman -
Vincent Black Lightning 1952 by Richard Thompson -
"Two selections this week.."
I Don't Know How To Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom) by Dwight Yoakam featuring Post Malone - "Bakersfield honky-tonk with plenty of twang. Nobody does it better."
While My Guitar Gently Weeps performed by Lucinda Williams - "This is from the 7th volume of "Lu's Jukebox," featuring covers of Beatles songs, previous editions of which have covered Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones, with other volumes given over to soul music classics, country music of the 1960s, and a Christmas album. I don't know if she plans an eighth volume but if she does I wouldn't be surprised if it is devoted to Neil Young. The stellar guitar playing on this tune is by Marc Ford, formerly of The Black Crowes. The song has of course been covered many times, but I think it suits Lucinda's voice very well. It was supposedly written by George Harrison at a point where he could see the imminent and inevitable break-up of the Beatles. I think it's a special achievement to have come up with something so universal from such specific circumstances. I hope you like it as much as I do."

"Best wishes to all RPMers."
"Hi all. Just back from a performance of 'Othello' at the RSC with our granddaughter (it's one of her A level texts, as it was for me in 1973!). Here are two golden oldies and a more recent-ish recording."
Them Belly Full (But We Hungry) by Bob Marley & The Wailers - "There are videos of this played live - and it's always a treat to see Bob Marley in action - but the sound is best on the album track."

I Wish by Stevie Wonder - "The early and mid-70s was such a fruitful period for Stevie Wonder and it is difficult to single out one track, but I've always loved this one ever since I saw an episode of Classic Albums about 20 years ago in which he recreates this number one layer at a time. SO MUCH going on!"

Bonny Light Horseman by Socks in the Frying Pan - "It's impossible to stroll through the Folk field without tripping over covers of this trad song - including a great one by the eponymous band - but this version is one I've been listening to repeatedly all summer long and into the autumn. Very sweet harmonies and tasteful playing - the light horseman is executed brilliantly."

"Take care all.
Cheers!"
"Here's some seasonal themed tunes dusted off from the vaults..."
Ghost by Slash featuring Ian Astbury - "From Mr. Hudson's first post GnR solo album....and still his best, in my view, with a plethora of guest vocalsits. How Mr. Astbury resisted putting in just one of his trade mark "Yee-aah" yells is beyond me."
Hammer Horror by Kate Bush - "Been a KB fan since hearing The Kick Inside and Lionheart on repeat play through my sisters bedroom wall in the early 80s. Had to be this one for Halloween, didn't it?"
Black Shuck by The Darkness - " A tale of the Suffolk hell hound. I thought Permission To Land was a brilliant rock record which exhibited much humour. I can just imagine the Suffolk lads working out what was going to rhyme with Shuck...probably took about a second...hilarious and kick-ass as well."
'Til Next Time...
