Week 29 - Fri 19 July

Welcome to the RPM Record Club Seven Day Soundtrack, week ending Friday 19th July 2024. Compiled in order of arrival in the inbox, as it's too hot to think of randomly mixing things up.....over to...

Kevin -

"Bonjour, mes amis! And greetings from an incredibly hot and endlessly sunny Lot-et-Garonne. Just time to post these three numbers before dipping in the pool again, then pouring some glasses of chilled rosé..."

Minor Swing by Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli - "Like those irritating reality TV shows about plucky Brits making a new life in France, or a celeb chef motoring round the county, and the producers lazily pluck an accordion soundtrack from the shelves, I have to offer this lovely number.

I was going to suggest a video of Grapelli playing with Martin Taylor et al in the 80s - which is when we saw him play on two occasions at the Theatre Royal in Norwich. Even in his late 70s and early 80s, he just beamed away with the sheer exuberance of playing, and had lost little of his technique and none of his style. I remember thinking what a joy it must be do spend your entire life doing something which gave you - and others - so much pleasure.

But in the end, this Hot Club number grabbed me."

Crawling King Snake by The Doors - "From their best album, one of their best blues."

The Primrose Lass by The Good Tune - "I guess many or all of you will have encountered these two guys before? (Yep...they've made a few appearances on the 7DS over the past few years. Tim) They have put out some really good videos, like this one. I don't know if they tour (they live in Denmark I believe). From them we learned a set of tunes built around Old Tom of Oxford and now we are learning this tune (which has a pretty name but also goes by 4 Nights Drunk!). I plan to join it with The Dimmers (a Lunasa tune)."
