It was Tuesday, and I was almost done with a long sequence of visits to companies making use of a new technology I had co-developed, the dynamic motion stator, or Dymostat. Most of them showed off fantastical ideas about what their future product lines would bring, without anything real to demonstrate. A few of them showed off current prototypes, and their dramatic improvements. The technology was mostly used as a new way to provide fluid motor control in machines. Yesterday I had seen one of the most impressive, a pilot for a construction site cement dispatcher which could literally throw wet cement into place from 100m away, plus or minus six-inches. Other machines were less daunting, and included home toys which balanced on one foot, or could elegantly hop around the room.
Each day I had no idea what to expect. I walked through the doors at Telemesh the same as other days, guessing in my mind what the company might be up to. The company overview was impressive. Their first product line is an advanced remote interactive network of employees, who could stand in for any number of jobs not requiring physical presence -- at a fraction of the cost and with better attentiveness. A security camera desk could be staffed 24/7 with people who are working their most alert 9am-5pm hours, by utilizing employees around the globe. Through an advanced system of video and audio conferencing, some employees might not even realize that the main shift operator was working from across the globe.
However, as we reached the end of the presentation I still saw no connection to our new technology. Steve, their VP of product closed out the presentation. "It's time to adjourn to our demonstration area, where you can see our prototypes with your technology." After heading down a couple hallways and through security doors, we were standing on a catwalk over an indoor lab which looked more like a police academy training facility. In each of four quadrants, a test subject was hooked up to some kind of medical equipment with a set of wires, and interacting with people standing around him.
It was now only Steve and I on the tour. "Kenneth, one of the major limitations of our current business is our limited ability to provide presence. The audio and video confencing modes are excellent in certain fields. However, physical presence is required for the large majority of service jobs. We've done some preliminary tests of virtual store clerks, but we found that customers simply didn't treat a virtual clerk with respect. Despite our superior ability to monitor them with cameras, their belief that without physical presence, they could lie, cheat, or steal without a real clerk on site was overwhelming."
He looked down across the trainee lab. "To solve this problem, we've been working for some time on an anamatronic telepresence robot. A virtual person, if you will. However, we have not been able to build a telepresence environment which allowed the operator to pilot the unit convincingly." Looking back at me. "With your technology, we have been able to remove the operator from the burden of precise balance and movement. The robot balances and pilots itself, while the operator simply guides rough movements." He guestured his hand towards the lab. "These four units you see are not human. They are operated by people, but their motions are fluid because of your technology."
I looked back down at the group of robots below. I watched their motions carefully, and saw them practicing basic motor and interaction skills. I started for a moment at each one, and the importance of what they had done set in. Technology today was much too primitive to create robots that interact like people, but this was something different, by combining telepresence with fluid control and a real person, the illusion created was astonishingly lifelike. "You mean to say that those four are not people? They are telepresence units?"
"Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Let's go take a closer look." He led me down off the catwalk and into the test lab. He introduced me to Reynolds, the first of the units. I was surprised at the lifelike behavior, facial expressions, and focus of the eyes right on me. "Reynolds, where are you operating from?"
"I am in a telepresence facility in Germany. This unit is new for me, so please excuse any awkward movements." He reached towards the table and poured each of us a glass of water from the pitcher. "There are 230 rx-43s connected to different components of the robot, handling balance, tracking, and motor coordination." My jaw dropped. We had never concieved of such an assembly. Most of our test work involved one unit per limb. This was something completely different. "However, let's head out, Reynolds has work to do yet today before his shift is up."
Steve led me out of the main lab and down a hallway. "So what do you think? Impressed?" He spoke as we walked deeper into the facility.
"Impressed is not the word. Even as a designer of the technology I hadn't envisioned something as grand as what you've built here. I've spent the last month watching product demonstrations, some quite impressive, but this is something else entirely. The possible ramafications on our world are astounding. With sufficient physical presence, this could be the end of labor wage boundaries. It could have an equalizing effect on the entire world. This could globalize services like the Internet globalized information."
He stopped and turned to me. "I'm glad you're impressed, because we'd like you to join us. Believe it or not, the products you've seen area already in use in areas of the world less restrictive than we are here. We want to remain at the forefront of this industry, and we can't think of a better way than to retain one of the key talents behind this technology." My mind was spinning. I was already a cherished scientist, but my corporation was research focused, happy to leave the applications to others. This application was exciting, and so tangible, compared to years of staring at equations and computer simulations. His phone began to ring and he quickly answered it. "I'm sorry, something very urgent has come up. Feel free to check out some of the neighboring labs, I'll come back to find you in a few minutes." He quickly ran off.
Lone Exploration
I had seen offers like this before. Most of the consumers of this technology were excited to get closer to its creators. However, this offer was truly peaking my interest. I took a peek through another lab window. What I saw was strange at first, a counter, cash register -- it looked like the inside of a 7-11. Until I realized, it's a practice room. I walked inside and said hello. "Hello, how can I help you?" the store clerk responded.
"I am visiting this facility and just taking a look at some of the lab environments. What is your name and how long have you been operating?"

I became instantly curious and started walking, peering quickly in each window. Security desk. Airline ticket agent. Housekeeper. Yard work. Tailor. I picked up my pace and turned a corner.
This was an astonishing company. I began to realize how quickly the world would change. Then I noticed something different. The labs in this section had smoked over windows. I walked a little further, more smoked over windows. I decided to peek inside.
