Backstory / Premise
Researchers discover latent K44 gene cluster. Before they know what they are onto, independent groups release triggers, and suddenly the <0.1% of humans with K44 markers become mutants with special powers.
'Species' prejudice begins. In order to retain order, society requests, and K44s voluntarily submit to be branded, to prevent normals from being afraid of them. K44's hide themselves, avoid becoming a spectacle. The fervor dies down.
Twenty years later, K44's live among us. Somewhere between disbelieved, feared, and revered. Many have heard stories, few have met one. It's this world in which Charles meets Kimber, a K44.
Concepts
college students in a history classroom are getting a lesson on the "preservation of normals act"
early gene modification, disease cures, etc... upper class becoming even more attractive, intelligent.
then designed radical mutation... strength, speed, endurance, and eventually the straw that broke the camels back, K4252 (size).
then the gene revolution... very few gene elite. Democracy, at it's worst, becomes mob rule, and the mob took swift action. it became a witch-hunt. Any representative with gene therapy was put on trial and jailed.
With the government as an example, the commoners turned on the gene elite. Those with mutations most visibly obvious were the majority of the targets. Ridiculed, cast out, eventually attacked and even in some rare situations, enslaved.
In less than a year, the situation was out of hand. Our country prides itself on freedom and equal rights, yet the population was taking the law into their own hands. Congress, attempting to handle the worst social catastrophe in our country's history, created the "preservations of normals act". Any person carrying physical modification gene mutations was subject to mandatory sterilization, and given safe haven to live in a government protected compound.
Characters
Kimber - K44 - 5'7" - used to living as an outcast despite being gorgeous. keeps her distance, walls up. underneath she is a bit awkward, corny sense of humor, horn-dog.

intro girl:
girl complains to her mother (on the phone) of just wanting to be normal, wanting to be treated like everyone else. Looks at the brand on her skin, dresses to cover it.
intro boy/class:
boy is in a summer session college class. partner project -- teacher assigns partners. He gets her as a partner. He's totally smitten with her. She's guarded. Discuss when to meet to work on the project.
project meetup 1:
Working on the project, she accidentally reveals her brand. They both recoil in shock. Him, because he's never met a K44 before. Her, because she doesn't want anyone to know. She suggests he'll want another partner, but begs him not to tell anyone. Tells him how people treat her differently. How she just wants to be normal.
"I'm no XXXX (K44 racist)." He shifts her clothing to cover the brand. That her secret is safe with him. Tells her he doesn't want another partner. Cracks a joke to ease the tension. (besides, if I asked for another partner, I'd be the one everyone treated funny. "mr professor sir, I'm having so much trouble partnering with the hottest girl in the class, can you please give me olga?". They laugh. She gives him a hug that feels more than just friendly to both of them. She dismisses the possibility that he could be into her, and steers them back to the project.
research:
He's not that informed, and decides to do some research on K44. (introduce the K44 backstory, and mutations / powers. "kina: move objects with their mind.", "siren: mental suggestion", "masser: cellular structure manipulation." , etc. etc..). Makes him even more into her. Can't stop thinking about her.
project meetup 2:
Working on the project again, 'finishing up for the day'. She's super flirting and giddy. She does everything but ask him out.... he finally nervously asks her out on a date, she accepts. with some trepedation, they kiss.
Then he wants to ask her something. "What's it like? K44? I was reading and.."
Her face turns stern, and she pushes away. "What, are you worried I'm a siren? Well I'm not. I just want to be normal. Can't anyone just let me be normal." Society gave her this cow-brand, isn't that enough? She sits back, slightly weeping.
He goes to her. "No. No. It's not like that. You're right, K44 is not normal. It's better than normal. I wish I had it. Please (name)." , Peels her hands away from her face.
"Trust me, you don't wish you had it. It's torture, hiding part of you because you know the world is afraid to see. That the world will reject you." It's like being in a walking prison.
"I won't reject you. I just want to know you." ---- "Please can we just let it go? I just want to be normal."
"Okay okay. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to push. Forget I brought it up. Just know that there is at least one person in the world who accepts you for who you are. And (name)?" She perks up. "Our date is totally still on." She smiles, hugs him.
reflection / excitement
on the phone with her mother, excited that she met a boy. tells her about him. tells her 'he knows'.
her mother gets a bit worried. 'be careful (name)'. you know how quickly students at your former school spread the rumors.
'he's different mom'. he wants to know me. He even asked what kind I am. Worries her mom even more.

project meetup 3
kiss, flirting, working on project, all intermixed. They talk about their pending date. He asks about what she'd like to do... Ohh anything.... picnic in the park, local band, movie, or you could just get me drunk and have your way with me. She gives him a peck. She asks a question about how he thinks they should do the next step on the project. Then blurts out "ohh, and im a masser."
"Ohh!" He responds, surprised that she blurted it out. He didn't even fully understand what that meant. In comparison a Kina or XXX was much more straightforward. "Uhm. What does that mean exactly?"
"It means I can alter subatomic cellular structure and nuclear forces." He looked back, puzzled, her description not meaning anything to him. She held his arm, and gently rested her knee on his hand. "Here, lift." She came up off the ground as if she weighed almost nothing. It was an amazing thing to witness.
He laughed. "So when you said you've been waiting for me to pick you up since the first day of class, you really meant it."
"Never heard that one before. Honestly." She scowled, and suddenly began returning to her normal weight, forcing his arm to the ground.
"So you can make yourself really light? From the stuff you read on the internet, you'd think K44s were really dangerous or something."
"Ohh, that's not the whole of it." She picked up his book bag, and suddenly it began shrinking, smaller and smaller. She held her opposite hand below it, and as it neared a size too small to hold the handle, she dropped it into her palm. It continued to shrink until it was about the size of a pack of cigarettes. She gestured it towards him in her hand. "Let's just say I never need to check luggage."
He was stunned, he reached his hand out, fascinated with the new tiny size of his bag. "That is so cool!" He carefully picked it up, marveling at it. It looked like a fake model of his bag, tiny and recreated in all it's detail. Only it was too perfect, too detailed to be anything but the real thing.
"And if you're strapped for cash, we only have to pay for one movie ticket."
He looked at her with a puzzled expression. "You can get tiny like this too?" It really shouldn't be so surprising. A minute ago she made her whole body weigh only a few ounces, and then he'd watched her turn his book bag into a four-inch miniature version of itself. He was finished inspecting his bag, and he offered it back to her.
"Yup. The structure changes work on most anything. There are limits, but they are kind of technical. Let's just say I can't have much effect on something big, like an aircraft carrier. But Me, you, a yelping neighbor dog, or that bitchy girl's homework page? No problem."
His mind stuck on the word "you". He looked at the tiny book bag in her hand, imagined that could be him, and didn't know whether to be fascinated or turn and run.
She noticed he was eyeing his bookbag. "Ohh, let's get that back to size for you." The bag began to grow in her hand, and a moment later she grabbed the handle, let it finish returning to normal size, and set it back down near him. "Does it bother you knowing all that?" He didn't know if that tingling sensation in his spine was fear or excitement, but he knew she was gorgeous and he was smitten. He decided to go for broke and shook his head.
"Wow, you don't know how good it feels to tell you and not have you run away. The last normal I told never spoke to me again." Her face formed a sexy smirk as she scooted up close. "Kinda makes you even sexier." She pressed her lips against his, and his hormones took over, responding as they locked tongues for several seconds. "Anything else you want to know?"
A flurry of questions collided in his brain, making it hard to pick out any one individually. Structure changes, not just lighter and smaller? Did that mean she could make things bigger too? Would a person get stronger or weaker? How long did it last? Was it permanent? Was it dangerous? Could she do it to him? Would she? He realized this was sounding too eager, so he just asked about her past experience. "Have you ever done that before? Shrunk a person?"
"No way! I'm totally kidding! That's against the geneva accord. If anyone found out I'd be thrown in jail, or worse!" Was she doing it again? Scaring him away? She didn't want him worried she'd do it to him, so she cracked a joke, "Though I admit I have always wanted a boy to play king kong with me in his hand. Maybe some day, when I trust you." The butterflies were getting the better of her, and she realized she would so much rather be making out than freaking him out. She leaned in, kissing him again.

they meet some friends out at a college bar
when she heads to the ladies' room, his friends challenge him that they heard rumors she's a K44.
he feigns ignorance. "i dunno, it never came up. K44s are people too, no?"
"never came up. How can you miss it, they have a big ass tatoo on their XXX." It's to help the police know they are a K44 right away. I thought you said you and her....
"I can't say I was looking for a K44 tatoo. Have you seen her tits?" He realized a moment too late that the guys were subtlety scissoring their fingers across their necks, giving him the universal sign for "stop right now or your dead."
He turns to see her standing there, having awkwardly overheard his locker-room characterization of her body. Surprisingly, she just barged in and laid a quick wet one on his lips before turning to the group. "Why are you talking about K44s? Is there one in the school? I hear they are kinda freaky -- like they can read your mind, or throw electric shocks from their fingers, or shrink you down and stuff you into a pocket. Can you imagine?" She shot Charles a quick glance as she gestured her fingers as if she was slipping something into her own shirt pocket.
For the boys, the motion was convenient cover check out her previously mentioned assets. For Charles though, it took on a whole other meaning. He knew she could do it. the mugger is obviously dead. they calm themselves. Nobody to tell about it. It was self defense, neither of them wants her to goto jail, or worse.
Charles gets his wallet, she brings it back to size and they look him up. he's a repeat offender. rape charges. they feel better about it. he got what he deserved.
he promises he'll never share rat her out.
sends her to a little darker place, but also bonds them... he knows a deep secret now.
