HOCO 2022!

By Christina Muttavanchery ('23)

Homecoming! It’s been haunting everyone’s social media feeds lately. At NR, our last one was in 2019, which feels like forever ago. Regardless, we had the opportunity to experience it again this year. It’s no secret that the theme of “Silent Disco Night” was quite controversial to many people, myself included. But since it was my last HOCO of high school, I thought why not go, have fun, and not speculate before it even happens?

A lot of the reasoning behind why individuals were upset about the theme was that they haven’t had a “normal” HOCO for a while. So this idea was quite a risk for it to turn out a bust.

However, I chose to go and the night was quite memorable! Once you had entered the school building, the barcodes from Infinite Campus were scanned to act as a ticket/check-in. The main lobby was used as a general DJ area where students could dance and enjoy the music without the use of headphones.

Through the doors of the main cafeteria, was a table to the left, covered with headphones! This was an interesting, new twist to the night. These headphones had three different channels, each having a different color: blue, green, and red. Two of the channels were music, and the third channel had nothing on it, making it easy to talk to friends in between the dance, or just taking a quick break, without having to completely remove the headphones. On the other side of the headphones was the volume control switch.

As the night went on, it was fun to see how some people would choose to be on the green channel, while others had the blue channel on. It was simple to know which channel students were listening to most of the time by just looking through the cafeteria. These headphones also served the purpose of just changing the song when it didn’t fit your preference! At times when people needed to just relax, they could just take off their headphones and walk out to the main lobby to sit and have some refreshments as well.

About halfway into the dance, we were told to scan a QR code, so we could vote for our HOCO king and queen. Then at the end of the night, a king and queen were announced and crowned. Our very own editor, Kelly Barros (‘23) was queen and Montana Veit (‘23) was the king!

The dance was an overall unique experience that many won’t forget. And for the underclassmen who might’ve missed this event, don’t miss the next one in the following years! High school can pass quickly, so what may be seen as little activities, are actually memories you’ll keep in your life once you graduate and leave NRHS.
