What’s the Best Pie? Apple vs. Pumpkin

By Kelly Barros ('23)

We all know which holiday is approaching... Christmas! One thing most of us forget about though is Thanksgiving. Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is amazing and the excitement of Santa Claus and presents is huge but my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving, has one unbeatable thing: pie. Not pie as in 3.14159265359.. but as in apple and pumpkin pies. These two delicious baked goods deserve much more hype than they’re given.

Did you know that approximately 27% of Americans' favorite pie is apple pie? That beats pumpkin pie, which stands at 12%, by 15 points! Apple pie is a sweet fruit pie made with mostly apples. It’s usually double-crusted and has a pastry both above and below the filling. It typically has a hint of cinnamon and is often served with whipped cream, ice cream, or cheddar cheese. The earliest printed recipe for apple pie is from England.

The largest pumpkin pie ever made was around 5 feet. Yes, five feet! That enormous pie took approximately six hours to bake, used about 80 pounds of pumpkin, and weighed over 350 pounds! Most pumpkin pies are not that big. Pumpkin pie is a creamy and sweet pie. It's not spicy, but you can taste the spices used. The texture of pumpkin pie is somewhere between pudding and cheesecake. If you haven’t tried pumpkin pie, I recommend you do!

Best Pie: Pumpkin Pie

Clearly, pumpkin pie is better than apple pie. Despite being seasonal, a whopping 50 million pumpkin pies are made a year! That number is extremely high and shows people love pumpkin pie (since pumpkin pie is not sold the entire year). I personally think anything and everything pumpkin is awesome so I might have some bias. I would love to know what you all think though. Should pumpkin pie stay the winner?
