Ping Pong Fever Sweeps the School

By Kevin Cahill ('23)

North Rockland has seen a variety of unusual sports over the years. From gym volleyball to spikeball to handball, it’s no surprise that our school loves its unconventional sports as a great form of fun and competition. And now, we welcome a new sport into the conversation—ping pong!

Our school’s ping pong fever sparked with the formation of the Ping Pong Club (PPC) last year. Started by Abey Alex (‘23), Jesse Falek (‘23), and Kelly Barros (‘23), under the guidance of Mr. Teglas, it was a small club that attracted little attention after school. However, as time went on, the PPC became increasingly popular. 3 members turned into 6, 6 members turned into 12, and eventually, the PPC became one of the biggest clubs in the whole school.

Part of the whole appeal of the Ping Pong Club was how relaxed and easy it was. Many after-school activities became too stressful and demanding for people, but with the PPC, the only goal was to have fun and socialize with your friends. It made (and still makes) for a great environment in which everyone wants to be there and relax.

However, just because it is relaxed it does not mean that there is no competition involved. In fact, the PPC recently held a school-wide tournament for both singles and doubles, nicknamed the “Ping Pong Winter Classic.” A ton of students showed up to the Main Cafeteria to watch. The marching band even volunteered to play music for the tournament!

After some awesome walk-out sequences, the tournament was underway. The singles finalists were Montana Veit (‘23) and Logan Kapusinsky (‘23), who faced off in a big championship match in a best-of-3 series. In the end, Logan won the series 2-1, with the final game ending 22-20 in his favor.

The doubles tournament also saw its fair share of excitement. The final match had Joshua Jacob (‘23) and Valentine Omotosho (‘23) face off against Logan Kapusinsky (‘23) and Kaitlin Gaviola (‘23), a greatly anticipated matchup that ended up paying off. After an amazing back-and-forth series, Logan and Kaitlin came out on top 2-1.

The students weren’t the only ones having fun, though. The PPC also held staff singles and doubles tournaments with teachers like Mr. Pena, Mr. Rogers, Mrs. DaPonte, and many more participating. In the end, the finalists of the staff singles tournament were Superintendent Dr. Felicello and Ski-Team Instructor Shaun Kapusinsky. Their match was incredible, with Dr. Felicello being crowned as the winner.

The staff doubles tournament was also really entertaining. That tournament saw Mr. Fyffe and Mr. McHugh in the championship, who dominated all of their previous matchups. That trend continued, as they won by a pretty good margin. That final round closed out the Ping Pong Winter Classic as a huge success.

All in all, even though the tournament ended, the PPC will continue to have its after school games in the Annex Foyer every Tuesday and Thursday. If you want to join for fun, everyone is welcome! If you want to join for competition, then make sure to show up and practice, because the Spring Tournament will come faster than you think…
