Must-Watch Halloween Classics!

By Kelly Barros ('23)

Is being freezing cold on Halloween night really worth the candy? Maybe instead of knocking on doors, you choose to stay in with your fuzzy, warm, comfort friends, watching a few Halloween classics. I for one might be doing that this year, even though I love free candy! If you are in need of some funny, scary, or kid friendly films, here are some that fit those lists. You might be surprised at how awesome these movies are!

An Amazing Watch:

Hocus Pocus (1993)

Directed by Kenny Ortega

Rated PG

Did you know that Hocus Pocus is the most-watched Halloween movie of all time? It could be because of how great it is. But watch it and decide for yourself! Hocus Pocus takes place in Salem, Massachusetts and is about Max, a teenager, who explores an abandoned house with his sister, Dani, and their friend, Allison. Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches who lived in the house, and in order for the witches to not become immortal, the kids must try to steal the witches' book of spells.

A Classic:

Halloween (1978)

Directed by John Carpenter

Rated R

The movie Halloween was so spectacular that there’s ANOTHER sequel of its 12-movie franchise that has just come out on October 14th, 2022! The original version is about a six year old boy, Michael, who murdered his 17 year old sister, Judith, on Halloween night in 1963. Michael was locked away for 15 years, but escaped while being transferred for a court date on October 30, 1978. After his escape, he returns to his hometown in Illinois, looking for his next victims. If you’re looking for something spooky, this is the one to watch!

My Winner:

Casper (1995)

Directed by Brad Silberling

Rated PG

Who doesn’t love watching movies about ghosts! When it comes to Ghostbusters, I don’t, but Casper makes me enjoy ghost movies. Casper, a kind young ghost, peacefully haunts a mansion in Maine, until James Harvey arrives to communicate with him and his fellow spirits. Harvey brings along his daughter, Kat, who Casper falls in love with. Their relationship is complicated by Casper’s transparent state and by his troublemaking uncles and their mischievous antics.
