Musical Drama All for Love or Clout?

By Harrison Gerson ('21) and Gabrielle Ceconi ('22)

If you’ve been one of the Tiktok obsessed users such as us, you may have heard the familiar lines, “I guess you didn’t mean what you wrote in that song about me,” whilst mindlessly scrolling on your For-You-Page. Since it was released in early January, the song hasn’t stopped blowing up. From briefly examining the lyrics, one can easily assume that it’s a breakup song. However, that isn’t exactly the case.

Let us spill the tea for you.

There’s been a lot of drama between three Disney Stars this past month. Let’s first review who’s who:

Olivia Rodrigo - Singer-songwriter of #1 Hit drivers license about her heartbreak with…

Josh Bassett - Fellow lead on the new “High School Musical” series with Rodrigo. He is supposedly dating…

Sabrina Carpenter - “That blonde girl, who [Josh Bassett] always talked about,” according to Olivia in her hit single.

Rodrigo and Bassett/Vulture

Supposedly, Rodrigo and Bassett were engaged in flirtatious and discreet relations in early 2020. According to gabesco on Tiktok, Rodrigo and Bassett were never engaged in public relations until Bassett began to hang out with Carpenter much more. Their public appearances together in TikToks suggested to fans that the two were now having their own fling. When Rodrigo released her hit song, the lyrics were rather suspicious towards Bassett and Carpenter’s relationship. In her song, drivers license, she mentions that “[he’s] probably with that blonde girl who always made [her] doubt.” This blonde girl seems awfully close to Carpenter. The song seems to point towards the relationship between Bassett and Rodrigo failing. Yet, amidst the songs themselves, was this all a ploy to get recognition?

Carpenter’s presence was relatively unknown until the release of Olivia Rodrigo’s famous song Driver’s License. Because of Rodrigo’s hit, everything associated with her has risen to fame in the fast lane.

As time passed since the release of drivers license, the drama only seemed to escalate.

Joshua Bassett released his song, Lie Lie Lie, on January 14th, less than a week after the release of Rodrigo’s hit. The lyrics themselves are also a bit suspicious, as they seem to point towards the controversy created by drivers license. The lyrics “so you’re telling them it’s all my fault,” seems to savagely point at the two’s failed relationship.

On February 1st, Carpenter released her new song, Skin. Fans instantly began to speculate that the song was an indirect attack at Rodrigo for specific lyrics such as “maybe blonde was the only rhyme,” and “don’t drive yourself insane.” Ouch. Although it is not confirmed, the song seems to be a rather harsh hit if it is about Rodrigo.

It seems plausible that the three have begun to piggyback off of each other’s drama, as they have not stopped trending since the beginning of 2021. Whether or not the whole triangle may truly exist, and the songs are a form of arguments and clap-backs at each other, the three artists have, respectably, created raw and emotional songs to which their listeners can relate.
