NR Sports Return!

By Olivia LoPresti ('22)

As the 2021-2022 school year starts, so do North Rockland's Fall Sports.  With fewer COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, the NY State Department of Education is allowing spectators back into the bleachers and outdoor sports to be played unmasked.

The excitement was palpable as the student section came to life at the first football game on Friday, September 10th against Suffern. It was an intense game, and although North Rockland played great defensively, and was up for most of the game, in the third quarter, the tides turned ultimately resulting in a loss for North Rockland. On the other hand, Lennyn Fulgencio (‘22), has been nominated as a finalist for Lohud's Super 11.

Our North Rockland Cheer Team performed for fans in the first football game of the season last Friday. Prior to cheering at the game, NR Cheer attended the Bryn Mawr Cheer Camp, with their varsity stunt group winning the top-gun stunting competition and Alexis Estrada (‘23) winning the top-gun jump competition.

North Rockland also welcomes a new fall sport this season: Boys' Volleyball.  Led by Head Coach Peggy Stead, a beloved NR English teacher, the boys are excited for their upcoming season. While they lost in their season opener to Clarkstown South on September 13th, they put up a good showing.

Girls' Volleyball is also looking forward to their season. They had their first game on Friday, September 9th against Scarsdale, and although it was a close game, they lost 2-3. However, they have many powerful players on the team, including Kayla Nicholas (‘23), who earned a spot on Lohud's Super 7 list for 2021.

Also earning spots on Lohud's Watch List for the 2021 Season are Boys' Soccer players Gabe Garcia (‘23) and Robert Pesantez (‘22).  They played their first game against New Rochelle on September 4th and lost 1-3, but came back for their second game against Arlington, winning 4-0.

Girls' Soccer also has many strong players this year, with five of their players, Megan MacMillan (‘22), Sydney Saponaro (‘23), Caroline Tomas (‘24), Alison Dwyer (‘23), Megan McGovern (‘24), nominated as candidates for the Lohud's Elite 11. They started their season off on the right foot with a 3-2 win against Clarkstown North on Friday, September 3rd.

Girls' Tennis is under new leadership this year with Coach Nicholas Teglas leading Varsity and Coach Scott Rogers leading Junior Varsity. They had their first match on September 10th against Clarkstown North, and while they fought hard, North Rockland walked away resiliently with the loss.

Cross Country competed at the Bear Mountain Invitational on Friday, September 20th. Jade Pazmino (‘22) and Elaina DeGrote (‘25) both placed in the Invitational.  Jade Pazmino also earned a spot on the Girls' Cross Country Lohud Super 7 list for 2021.

North Rockland is so proud and honored to have wonderful athletic teams with athletes who make it happen! Congratulations!
