A Season Like Never Before

By Liam McCarthy ('22) and Megan Macmillan ('22)

The pandemic constantly changes the world of high school sports. However, at North Rockland High School, our athletes persevere through these challenging times.  The Girls Basketball season started off great, as they beat Clarkstown South. Unfortunately, in their next game against the same opponent, they came up short.  While the season has just started, things are looking bright for these athletes.

Grace Mallozzi (‘22) explains that her team was able to come out on top after their first game. However, in their second game, they fell short.  She exclaims that “they [Clarkstown South] got the best of us in the first half, as we were simply being out-hustled.”  She further states that the team never gave up, as in the second half of the game, the team "picked up the intensity, but it was not enough to make up for the 20 point lead.”  Losses are never easy, but Grace is confident that she and her teammates will come back stronger. They prepare to play Albertus Magnus soon.

Following Grace’s statement, teammate Olivia Boyd explains that the first two games of the season “[made her team] realize that [they] need to come ready to play for every single game, regardless if [they] beat the same team the night before.”  However, she describes their loss as a learning experience, as the team “learned that movement and communication is key to [their] success on the court.”  Olivia is hopeful for the rest of her season and promises they will “give it [their] all every single game as if it is the last time [they]’re on the court."

Grace and Olivia’s teammate, Sophia Corretier, says that, after the first two games, their main focus is to “make sure[they] come ready to play every game knowing[their] season can stop at any time.” She is confident that the team will "make the best out of the remaining season," and she is "excited to... really start clicking as a team. [They] all have been working on the side getting ready for the season, and now that it's finally here, [she is] excited to see what [her team] can do.”

These girls and the rest of their teammates are grateful to even have a season under such crazy circumstances and are going to make the best out of what they have. Every athlete is excited for the future of their season, and even though it is a shorter season than usual, the girls will make the best out of it.
