The Best Winter Holiday Movies & Songs in NRHS!

By Valentina Omotosho ('23) & Leslie Urena ('24)

Even though the holidays are over, music and movies can work as a time machine of sorts to transport you back to the jolly memories you’ve made in the past years. If you’re feeling a bit reminiscent of the holidays, the article will recommend great movies and songs to put you back in the spirit of jingle bells ringing all around! Valentina handled the movies and Leslie handled the songs. Up first, are NRHS's favorite movies!

MR. PADE (SCIENCE TEACHER)

Mr. Pade’s favorite holiday movie is Love Actually, as he enjoys observing the “human interactions and the beauty of the movie,” which has the “connection of the characters” in the ending. It also helps that Hugh Grant, who’s in the movie, is the king of rom-coms!

Up next is MR.GIAMMARINO (SPANISH TEACHER)

He’s had the same favorite movie since childhood, which is The Year Without a Santa Claus. He remembers fondly that he was a “big believer in Santa” and that the movie is a “great childhood memory” of his.

Last up is CHRISTINE RICHARDSON ('23)

Her favorite Christmas movie is The Grinch! She explains that she “loves the story line” and finds it really “funny.”

Now, on to the musical portion of this article! Leslie created a Google form to poll students and teachers throughout the school. Rather than having people vote on just one song of all the great options there are, she split them up into three different eras.

The first is The Oldies But Goodies Era, which includes great and comforting music from the 1940’s through 50’s. The second is The New Classics Era, featuring songs that were once new but have now become staples in American culture since their initial releases in the 70’s through to the 90’s. Last was the Modern Era, and this era includes a collection of new contemporary hits from the 2010’s that puts listeners in the holiday spirit.

The Winners & Contenders of The Oldies But Goodies Era...

🏅 First place goes to Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms (33.8%)

🥈 Second place goes to Rockin Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee (24.1%)

It seems that the people of NRHS have spoken! Their favorite songs are “Jingle Bell Rock” by Bobby Helms, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey, and “Santa Tell Me” by Ariana Grande! I, Leslie, agree with all the winners, but the winner of the Modern Era; my favorite song from that era happens to be “Underneath the Tree” by Kelly Clarkson. I feel it was cut from the same cloth as all the wonderful songs from the New Classics Era, which is my personal favorite era of those on the form.
