Dash & Lily Review

By Christina Muttavanchery ('23)

Want something to watch while drinking a hot cup of cocoa reminiscing about Christmas? Dash & Lily is a strong contender. The show was released on Netflix on November 10th with 8 episodes that range from 23 to 27 minutes long. It’s directed by Fred Savage, Pamela Romanowsky, and Brad Silberling. The series gets increasingly interesting through each episode, leaving you on the edge of your seats!

Not only is the show a Netflix Original, but also a rom-com! It takes place in New York City and shows a ton of cool spots like Macy's Herald Square, Washington Square Park, the Ferrara Bakery, and much more. It’s a sweet, funny show about two teens connecting and coming together and being there for each other, all without actually meeting in person! Our female lead Lily is played by Midori Iwama (professionally known as Midori Francis), and our male lead, Dash, is played by Austin Abrams.

The show brings diversity as well since one of the main characters is from a Japanese background which is showcased in many moments. Additionally, the show highlights a positive LGBTQ+ biracial relationship... you'll have to watch to find out with whom!

Follow awkward teen Lily who doesn’t seem to connect with other kids her age but finds comfort in her favorite book store and in celebrating Christmas with family instead. We soon learn that her favorite book store is a shared comfort with a boy named Dash.

Since socializing isn’t a skill that Lily can do so well, she decides to leave a scavenger hunt in one of her red leather notebooks which she keeps in a bookstore called The Strand, awaiting her so-called “soulmate”. Imagine Lily’s surprise when it finds itself in Dash’s hands, who’s supposed to be her soulmate, but doesn’t like Christmas!

Dash turns out to be more alike to Lily than they both know. Dash is a brooding and cynical male lead: he doesn’t quite have joy when thinking about Christmas like Lily does. He thinks that Lily is living in a bubble thinking the world is perfect, but the question is: does Lily change her point of view or does Dash change his?

Based on this best-selling book /  Cover Art by Netflix

Throughout the series, their friendship and trust flourishes between each other. They both push each other to try new things and talk about anything heavy on their hearts through a red leather notebook.

Seeing the characters pass by each other will spark imagination about Christmas next year. This is a must watch rom-com that will force pondering about moving to the city to experience what Dash & Lily have!
