The Wizard of Oz Musical!

By Christina Muttavanchery ('23)

The Wizard of Oz is practically everyone's favorite movie. It was released in 1939, and directed by Victor Fleming. The film starred Judy Garland (Dorothy Gale), Jack Haley (the Tinman), Bert Lahr (the Cowardly Lion), and Ray Bolger (the Scarecrow). Here's a quick summary of The Wizard of Oz for anyone who’s confused: Dorothy and her dog (Toto) are spun around in their house after a horrendous tornado comes to Kansas. Soon they find themselves in the land of Oz! On their journey to find their way back home, they follow the guidance of the good witch, Glinda, and get on the yellow brick road to meet the great Wizard of Oz. On the way they pick up some friends who also seek help from Oz in different ways. While on their journey they come across hurdles and obstacles, but must work together to achieve what they all want and wish for.

Before I dive into my review, I also got the chance to interview the actors themselves, so take this time to learn some more interesting facts/info about them and the connections with their characters!

Dorothy Gale

(Played by Maddie Miley & Sophia Nardone)

Maddie ('23): "I love how kind Dorothy is, like even though she needs to get back to Kansas she still puts the trio's happiness over hers. She was so happy for them when they got their gifts, and kind of accepted her fate when she realized there may be nothing in the basket for her! Dorothy is definitely very different from me, she was so patient with her journey. I definitely would’ve been yelling if I couldn’t go back to Kansas!"

Sophia ('22): "I loved that Dorothy was a heroine that had overcome obstacles she did not even know were possible! She is imaginative and strong-willed, which I love. I think my character is similar to me because we both are independent, confident and creative! I think that we both have challenges, but never lose hope, and know how to reach a light at the end of the tunnel!"

Hunk/Scarecrow

(Played by Jordan Baez)

Jordan ('24): "I love how the Scarecrow just has so much love in his heart and is willing to put himself at risk for the safety of others, me and him are alike in that way. We both may underestimate ourselves as well, but we will always be there for the people we love!"

Hickory/Tinman

(Played by Eddie Cigna)

Eddie ('23): "I love the Tinman’s ability to be empathetic and comforting, even though he doubts himself so much. I feel like it’s really important for people to see that just because someone is kind, doesn’t mean they don’t doubt themselves! I’d say the Tinman and I are pretty similar because we both try to help our friends, and we’re both made of tin. I, however, rust up far less than he does, so there is that key difference!"

Zeke/Cowardly Lion

(Played by Armando Mendez)

Armando ('22): "I loved that he had true character development. He went from being so meek and scared to confident and having the ability to do anything. This character is very different from what you show on the outside but a lot like me on the inside. I was able to bring out what I never get to show and it felt great!"

Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West

(Played by Sophia Carlevaro & Naila Rosario)

Sophia ('23): "I love that she's evil and goes out of her way to make Dorothy's life miserable for a pair of shoes. I too would ruin someone's life for a pair of really pretty shoes, but I do really love and connect to the ambition of the wicked witch and her determination. She is willing to kill for something she wants and even though that's crazy, it's really cool."

Naila ('23): "I had so much fun playing the role. My favorite thing to do was the cackle for sure. The Wicked Witch and I are polar opposites to how I act in real life, that’s why it was so much fun!"

Aunt Em/Glinda

(Played by Jaslyn Martinez & Grace Florenza)

Grace ('22): "What I loved about my character is that I got to play a mother figure to the little munchkins. I also loved how different Auntie Em was from Glinda. I got to be mean in one scene and nice in the next scene. I also discovered that Glinda and I are very alike. We both have bubbly personalities and we are both very compassionate towards children. Playing her was one of the best experiences in my time at North Rockland."

Professor Marvel/Wizard of Oz

(Played by Symon Andriyevsky)

Symon ('22): I think the best part about my character was that I was allowed to be as obnoxious as I wanted. Being scared is fun! When I got into the booth it was immediately a change. It was hard not to laugh with the audience when they saw my face appear on the screen, but the scowl had to remain! Oz is, I think, one of the more cowardly personas that appear in the show, (other than the cowardly lion though ahah), imagine hiding in your house for eternity and not even showing your actual face to people? I, on the other hand, would like to think that I am not a coward! I will say though, Oz was one of the most fun characters that I have ever played, and he will be near and dear to my heart.

Now for my Review!

I got the chance to go to the show on its opening night. Everyone knows opening nights are always hectic for those involved in the production, but everyone at NR handled it very well. I enjoyed the show in many different ways, but my favorites were when Toto was on stage. At first I was expecting a doll to be the dog, but imagine my surprise when I saw the cutest little dog with fluffy white fur on the stage. Toto in this showing was played by Mr. Bjorkman’s dog, Jack.

Mistakes are bound to happen no matter what, but the true test is how one can handle and deal with it. All the actors and crew were very professional when Toto refused get into the Scarecrow’s arms or when he was supposed to escape from where the Evil Witch of the West was, but laughably, came back through the doors instead.

In all honesty, these unavoidable bloopers really humanized the show and the crowd laughed along and quite enjoyed themselves. I got to see Maddie Miley play Dorothy, and her rendition of “Over The Rainbow” was fantastic! It's certain she did all the songs in the show justice. It was as if I got transported to the Land of Oz. Jordan Baez’s hilarious clumsy falls as the scarecrow also got me laughing along with the cowardly lion's scaredy-cat antics, performed by Armando Mendez.

The tight connection and friendship between the trio and Dorothy is clear, and this can be symbolized with the famous scene where their arms are connected by their elbows and they walk through each obstacle thrown in their way.

If you weren’t able to catch this play, keep an eye out for the next, you won’t want to miss it!
