Self-Care Advice

By Yamilet Chabla Urgiles ('25)

February is the perfect time to start self-care if you haven’t been listening to yourself and your body. It’s about checking in with yourself and acknowledging what you need for yourself. It’s about being present and checking up on yourself and practicing gratitude for everything you have in life. Although some people may be celebrating Valentine's day with others, it’s important to not forget to celebrate with ourselves and remind ourselves we are important too. Here is some self-care advice to get you started!

Spend Time in Nature

It’s important to stay in the present moment and spend some time in nature, especially since our weather has been getting better! It’s important to gain some clarity by spending time with yourself and enjoying the view of nature. Observe the world around you and stay connected with it. It brings more peace within yourself and helps add purpose to yourself.

Gratitude

Trying to practice gratitude is important, but we’re all guilty of forgetting it once in a while. A small practice is to start by thinking about three things you’re grateful for. This can be whatever comes into your mind, and you’ll see the effect of how it improves our mood by having something to be grateful for! Another method is to start by writing down what you’re grateful for, as well as showing gratitude to others like family, friends, or others. Often, it’s best to be straightforward and tell someone face-to-face that we’re grateful for them.

Exercise

It’s important to keep our mental health in check, but it is equally as important to keep our bodies moving and active. This can totally depend on what you like, for example, yoga, running, and lifting weights. It doesn’t matter what the activity is as long as you enjoy doing it (and it’s safe as well). It’s also beneficial to get an adequate 8 hours of sleep to properly let our bodies rest. This means, do not stay up at night and continuously scroll on social media feeds, but instead listen to your body for how tired it feels.

A Hobby

Having a hobby allows you to keep yourself creative and to do something you enjoy. It also helps you to gain connections with other people that may have the same interests as you. These socialization situations help to build better social skills with other people and can even reduce stress!

Quality Time

It’s an especially good idea to carve out time to spend with others since it can boost your happiness and confidence. It allows us to build better relationships with ourselves and others by spending time with other people.
