NRHS'S Bowling Team!

By Brielle Litt ('24)

Bowling has been around for hundreds of years and has developed tremendously along the way.  It’s a super fun sport to play with your friends and family, but it’s also well known for its competitive side. Throughout the years, bowling has become more and more competitive, which has encouraged many schools to form bowling teams. The bowling team at North Rockland High School has existed for many years, and the girls’ team is on a 17 year streak of winning the section title! The high school team isn’t limited to just 9th through 12th graders, but allows 7th and 8th graders to join as well.  This year, we are doing great! There are 3 Varsity teams with several great bowlers from previous years, and a lot of new additions as well. There’s a Girls Varsity team and a Boys Varsity A and B team. The purpose of the A and B team for the Boys Varsity is to replace the Junior Varsity division which has been phased out. However, each bowler has been showing their hard work and dedication to the team, and their scores are definitely showing improvement!

Girls Bowling Team

The girls are having an incredible season, which isn’t too uncommon for the North Rockland Girls’ Bowling Team.  Their record is 61-2 games but overall they are undefeated! They have been in first place the whole season and have a team average of a 188. Gianna Varano (‘25) is leading the team by not only having the highest average of a 198, but the highest average overall for the entire Girls’ Varsity Bowling league. Ashley Puleo (‘24) is also doing fantastic with an average of a 189.  In the girls game versus Nanuet, they won with an outstanding total score of 2,569 to 556. Ashley Puleo had the second top high scratch game (231) and series overall (610) followed by Gianna Varano with the third highest scratch series of 595.  The girls have shown tremendous improvement and dedication and are working very hard to keep the streak of winning the section title!

Boys Bowling A Team

The Boys A Team is also having a great season!  They are in first place with a record of 59-4! Kyle Murray (‘23) is helping the team by having both the highest average for the North Rockland A Team and the highest average overall for the Boys Varsity Bowling with a 225. Mikael Najarro (‘24) is also having a fantastic season with the second highest average of a 216. Dylan Bulusan (‘23) has the third highest average with a 212.  All the boys are doing great and their averages show how amazing they really are.  In the boys game versus Nyack, they beat them with a total score of 2,976 to 2,505. Dylan Bulusan had the second top high scratch game of a 231, followed by Kyle Murray with a 230. Overall, Mikael Najarro has the highest game score with a 300 - a perfect game!  The boys have shown lots of improvement and dedication and are working very hard to get their second year winning streak for section titles this year!

Boys Bowling B Team

The Boys B Team has been showing vast improvement throughout the season too!  Most of the boys are new to bowling but are still doing amazing.  They are in fourth place with a record of 35-28. Frankie Porter (‘26) is showing off his skills with having the highest average for the North Rockland B Team with a 173!  Matthew Stoll (‘23) has the second highest average of a 171 and has one of the highest games for the B Team!  Jaiden Brown (‘28) follows in third with the overall average of a 164.  In the boys game versus Tappan Zee, they beat them with an outstanding total score of 2,648 to 1,097. Matthew Stoll had the highest overall game for the team with a 225. Anthony Punzi ('23) also had a great overall game of a 198! The boys have shown lots of improvement and dedication and are working very hard to get better for the rest of the season.

"Two seniors, [Anthony Punzi and Matthew Stoll] that came about to bowl with no experience bowling ever, are doing extremely well” - Coach Don LaSpina

Overall, all three teams are doing amazingly! There are so many fantastic bowlers that are showing their skills and efforts to do the best they’re capable of for their teams.  The hard work and dedication is paying off tremendously and the rest of the season should show just that!
