The Serrallo

The Serrallo is the maritime district of Tarragona. As a neighbourhood, it had its beginnings in the middle of the 19th century when the railway line was built and the port of Tarragona was expanded, and it was therefore necessary to expropriate the land next to the sandbar, where the fishermen lived. They were in turn displaced and allowed to build small houses,  made of wood and with wheels, so they could be moved if it was convenient.

From the year 1868, they began to build permanent homes and land was gained from  the sea and the fishing pier was built there. The neighbourhood maintains a simple architecture by the sea along narrow streets with little ventilation. In 1942, a fishing pier was built there, and the first market was opened in 1946.
