Angels's Square

We are above the archaeological zone of the provincial forum. Looking at the Ca la Garsa building, which can be seen in this square, we can  see that it was built largely with reused Roman limestone. The building is an example of the presence of the Jewish community in Tarragona. It is believed that it could have been the synagogue. Nowadays,  only the Medieval (Gothic) arches and part of a late Roman wall are preserved.

In this neighborhood, precisely the Jewish quarter would be found from 1238 to 1492,  without interruption. This community lived independently from the rest of the city, it had a synagogue, baths, and a school. Surrounding this square were four gates at the four cardinal points, with their own exit to the outside of the city: the Jewish gate.

In the 14th-15th centuries, this small square was known as Plaça de la Juheria, then it was known as Plaça dels Jeues (Jewish Square).  Then,  at the end of the 15th century, it was referred to as the square of Seguí. In the 16th century it was known as Placeta de na Fenosa (by the owner of the building) and, finally, in the 17th century, as the square of the Mother of God of the Angels, because there was a chapel dedicated to the Mother of God. However,  that was demolished in one of the refurbishments.

Since 2008, in the last archaeological intervention, these remains were protected as a cultural asset of local interest.
