Balcony

"In Tarragona, a leisurely lunch and a strolling dinner" is one of the phrases known by people who, after dinner, go up the Rambla Nova towards the Balcó del Mediterrani. An open space, a fantastic and emblematic viewpoint of the people of Tarragona, a recurring image in different authors such as Olga Xirinacs, Maria Aurèlia Capmany, Lurdes Malgrat and Montserrat Abelló.

We are at the Balcó del Mediterrani, a cliff about 43 meters above the sea, which allows us a privileged view of the Mare Nostrum, the port of Tarragona, Platja del Miracle (Miracle Beach)  and the Amphitheater. The railing was designed by Ramon Salas i Ricomà in 1889, the Modernist era and was fitted between 1890 and 1894. The area was repaired in 1891 and was renovated in 1947. Before its construction, there was a wall which limited the Paseo de las Palmeres ( Palm Tree Promenade)  that separated the cultivated fields at its feet and the line of the sea. The name of the balcony is due to Emili Castelar, president of the First Spanish Republic, who named it after visiting the city in 1863.

In front of the Balcony is the monument to the Catalan navigator, Roger de Llúria. At number 1 of the Rambla, there had previously been the Fortí de Cervantes (demolished in 1884), and later the Casa de la Dinamita, Casa Güell, which was Modernist style and called  the "Tarraconense quarry" by the architect Josep M Pujol of Barberà (1912). On the other side of the Rambla, we find Casa Rossell Porta, located at the intersection of Baixada de Toro with Rambla Nova, right next to the stone stairs built in 1890.
