Forum Square

The name refers to the Roman Forum. Tarraco had two forums: the provincial forum, which occupied the entire Old Quarter , between the area of worship (now the cathedral) and the area of leisure (the old circus); and the local forum, which was located between the current Soler, Lleida, Cervantes and Gasometer streets.

We can observe remains of the first forum in the square where we are now, that of the King and that of the Pallol.

The lower square of the provincial forum was a huge rectangular enclosure, surrounded on three sides by a complex structure of porticoes and decorated inside with gardens and numerous statues, of which many pedestals with inscriptions remain, for example, in Merceria Street.
