The Necropolis

In the lower part of the city, on the banks of the Francolí river (Tulcis for the Romans) we have the early Christian necropolis of Tarragona. It is a late Roman burial complex from the middle of the 3rd century AD, which was used until the 5th century.

It changed over the centuries, both in its form and in its function. Being located near the city's port, it was an area closely linked to port activity. 

The most common funerary containers found in this sepulchral space were amphorae and tiles, but also stone and lead sarcophagi and wooden coffins. 

It was discovered in 1923 when work began on the construction of the Tabacalera, the tobacco factory.  

The Necropolis grounds are made up of an excavated open-air area, the museum building, some burial crypts and an area of gardens with exposed sarcophagi. Various performances have been held at the installation: in 1971, 1986 and 1993, among others.
