Amphitheater

We are now in one of the most emblematic places in Tarragona,  perhaps the most representative and immortalized in the city.

As the capital of an imperial province, Tarraco had to have three buildings dedicated to the entertainment of the people: the circus, the theater and the amphitheater.

The building was located outside the urban core, although very close to the city and the Via Augusta, and close to the beach, where the animals that had to participate in the shows were unloaded.

In the amphitheater, two types of activities were organized: gladiator fights and wild animal fights or hunts. In addition, the Amphitheater was also the place where those sentenced to death were executed.

In the 6th century, a cult basilica dedicated to the martyrs Saint Fructuós, Saint Auguri and Saint Eulogius, who were burned alive in the arena of the amphitheater, was built there. During the twelfth century, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria del Miracle was built over the early Christian basilica.
