Glucose, Total Cholesterol and High Density Lipid testing may be requested as part of the medical examination.
Normal ranges are noted below:
Cholesterol: 4.0-5.5mmol/L
HDL: 1.0-2.0mmol/L
Glucose: 4.0-6.0mmol/L (generally peaks 2/24 post meal)
Accutrend testing is performed when only Glucose and TChol is required.
Procedure:
Collect supplies (gloves, lancet, alcohol wipe, test strips, drape, tissue).
Inspect expiry dates of equipment and strips to ensure currency.
Swab the client's finger with the alcohol wipe and allow to dry.
Lance the side of the finger (select appropriate depth based on finger condition).
Dispose of lancet in sharps container.
Sweep up toward the lanced area to assist in collecting blood. Lowering of the finger also assists with blood flow.
Wipe the first drop away.
Using the collection tube, collect the required amount (40 microlitres) of blood.
Perform glucose test first (12 seconds), using up to 1/2 of the collection amount.
Perform cholesterol test next (150 seconds), using the remaining collection amount.
Perform calibration monthly.
The Cardiochek test is used when HDL is required in addition to Glucose and HDL. No Accutrend testing is required as the Cardiochek will do all three.
