Contraindications (C/I) and Precautions (P):

• Pregnancy (when in vicinity of uterus).
• Inbuilt stimulator e.g. pacemaker (when in vicinity of device).
• Circulatory insufficiency.
• Sensory loss.
• Risk of dissemination – acute infection, tumour.
• Implants – plastic or metal.
• Exacerbation of existing conditions – recent radiotherapy, skin conditions.

This practice recommends providing the following:

“When having electrical stimulation you should feel buzzing and tingling in the area. You may also feel mild muscle tension. If you feel anything other than this sensation, or if you feel it concentrating, becoming sharp or stinging, or if you experience any pain or discomfort you must let me know immediately; otherwise, you may risk skin and other tissue damage under the electrodes. If in doubt, call me. Please do not move or touch any of the equipment during treatment. If you become uncomfortable, please ring the bell. Do you understand what I have said? Do you have any questions? Are you happy for me to proceed?”
