5.6.5 Ultrasound Machines

Contraindications (C/I) and Precautions (P):

• Pregnancy (when in vicinity of uterus).
• Inbuilt stimulator e.g. pacemaker (when in vicinity of device).
• Circulatory insufficiency.
• Sensory loss.
• Risk of dissemination – acute infection, tumor.
• Implants – plastic or metal.
• Exacerbation of existing conditions – recent radiotherapy, skin conditions.

Specific Tests:

• Hot / cold
• Sharp / blunt

Warning / Informed Consent:

This practice recommends providing the following:

“When having ultrasound you will usually feel nothing other than the applicator pressure and on occasion a mild heat. If you feel any discomfort or it feels hot under the applicator you must immediately tell me immediately otherwise, you may be in danger of being burnt. Do you understand what I have said? Do you have any questions? Are you happy for me to proceed?”
