Nuno Serrão was born on Madeira island of Portugal. He has found comfort in the ideas of minimalism, art (photography being his form or art) and Science. Nuno states, "Science has given me all the religion I need" For Nuno science is a great interest in his life, Photography is his way to encompass and make sense of where his interest in science take him. Physically and mentally. Sticking to a common theme, Science inspires him as well. Nuno says, "Science has driven my curiosity to places it would be impossible to reach..." (otherwise). His common belief is that Photography is always finding way to put life into a frame and tell a story.

Compare and Contrast

Both Nuno and Ryan Photograph the same subject matter, The outdoors. But there photos have different vibes. Nuno's Photos are very desolate with no or very little trace of humans. abandoned feel to them. While all of Ryan's either have humans or very obvious and recent traces of humans. Nuno's photos have lowkey lighting and are shot at twilight or with a very cloudy ski. to contrast, Ryan's photos have more cheriful lighting, sunny or light hazy clouds. Both photographer's use natural light in their photoes. Nuno's photos usually have a less conventional horizon line; meaning that they are either very high or low in the frame. This compositional choice adds to the oddity of his photos. Ryan uses more of a "normal" composition in reference to his horizon line. This adds the to his comfy resourcing vibe, there is something resouring about having the horizon in the middle of the photo. To recap, Nuno and Ryan photograph similar subjects yet they achieve different feels through choice of composition lighting and viewpoint.

Critique of Nuno Serrão

Critique of Ryan Hill

Nuno's work really captures the essence of a place, all his photos are really clean and simple. I also like his subject matters, it feel like he is photographing a secret place, when I was in california this summer there were lots of vast expanses of land near Vandenberg AFB with maybe a huge telescope out in the middle of it all. His photos make me want to explore places that people haven't been. These places just look beautifully empty.

Ryan's work Shows us more of a lifestyle. All his photos are oriented around surfing and the life of a surfer, I really like this for one because I myself surf but, also because all his photos have an adventurous feel to them. they are exploring a new break or a remote coastline. I being an adventurous person really like the Subject and way Ryan Presents a place.
