Gridded Value Portrait

(12 x 18)

(1) In this project we were directed to first find a photo, high in contrast and including many tonal values. we then drew a 1" by 1" grid over the photograph and then the same over a section the same size as the photograph (8.5 x 11) on our drawing paper. I then began filling in the grid on my paper using shading techniques and drawing only what I could really see.

Throughout I used principles of design such as value to create contrast, unity and form. I also used line to create movement in the hair.

I am most proud of my hair and hat/forehead area, It looks life like and similar to the photo. One thing that I struggled with was the eyes, their angles are a little off and they are to squinty.

After researching some artists I decided to base the background of my gridded self portrait of Kehinde wiley's art. Wiley is a Contemporary artist who paints people of color over wallpaper like backgrounds. These Banana leaves (and other tropical leaves) take Wiley's floral wallpaper background style onto a more literal level. Wiley tends to work in colors brighter than life. keeping this in mind while coloring in my leaves I made them more vibrant to match his style.
