red breasted merganser
9 x 12
watercolor
for this project we were instructed to make a realistic duck in a realistic landscape. I chose watercolor for this peace. I started with the background and moved forward with more layers. I experimented with color on a test paper, I also worked with brush technique.
I used form to create rhythm and unity in the branches and grass of the landscape. I used color to create unity in the overall color scheme. I also used color to make contrast between the bird and the background. Finally, I used space to make the bird the emphasis of the composition.
in this piece, the story is pretty simple, to me it looks like the male duck is watching over the nest. This project relates to my life because I like to take most of my photographs with a center composition and that's how I painted this duck. I'm proudest of the detail in the duck and the duck over all along with the colors and especially how foggy the background looks. I struggled with getting bored of painting branches. I just had to persevere n' take some snack breaks.
