still life

Venis statue

9''x12''

graphite

For this still life I was limited to items in my classroom. I found this figure interesting because it's a replica of the oldest piece of art that has ever been found. This made it fitting for a still life in art class. I also like that its a still life of a human figure. I kept the figure at the bottom of the paper so their head would end up in the middle of the paper. I think this simple composition is very effective yet not distracting from the figure itself.

For this project I used graphite and a tortillion to spread out and shade with graphite.

I started with a line sketch without any depth I then continued to make sure there were no lines left but only shadows and highlights. I added my darks and highlights to add more value. My last step was to add a cast shadow to add more depth to the whole drawing. This forced me to revise my former darks, making them darkers so the would still pop off the newly shaded background.
