Happy Wave key tag

2''x3''

Leather, Laser cutter

Idea: with the laser engraving project I was drawn to the leather key tag. I enjoy EDC items (everyday carry items) and was excited to be able to customize something on my keychain.

Materials: for this project I used my laptop, a sharpie and paper to sketch my design out and the laser cutter software/machine.

Process: I started off by sketching out my design. I had come up with this design last year and like drawing it just as a doodle on things of mine. Surfing is a happy place for me so a happy wave represents that to me. I then cleaned up the design in photoshop and illustrator and finally moved it into the engraver.

Hedgehog Mountain Design

6''x4

Black Sharpie

Idea: for this project I wanted to combine the two word in the title into one graphic. The current sign just has a hedgehog and no mountain.

Materials: for this project I simply used a black sharpie.

Process: I started by researching the face of a hedgehog because I wanted to incorporate it into the shape of a mountain. Once I could draw a simplified hedgehog face I started working with mountain shapes. I then combined both graphics. The ears of the hedgehog sticking off the mountain gave me the idea to use the lettering as the spikes on the hedgehog.

Marlin print

18''x24''

Block printing Ink, Blick studio markers.

Sharpie sketch(top) and linoleum carving(bottom)

Marlin print

18''x24''

Block printing Ink.

Idea: For this project I created a simplified design of a marlin. I used to get marlin shaped drink stirrers at a restaurant that went out of business. The shape of them is nostalgic to me.

Materials: For this project I used blue block print ink, linoleum carvers and a sharpie.

Process: I started with a large sharpie drawing of a marlin. I focused on the outlines and some gestural lines to give the fish movement and personality. I then transferred the sketch onto linoleum with transfer paper and a sharpie. Next, I carved it out and began printing. This took some trial and error before I got a print I was happy with. Either print is not the most stereotypical perfect print but the faded ink adds a desirable underwater look. For the print I added marker to I wanted to contrast the simplified nature of a block print and add more detailed realistic coloring.

Poppy Tree Ascension

12''x28''

Acrylic Paint

Idea: For this project I wanted to do something refreshing to flatten out any ruts I had fallen into after a year of art class. I rarely use acrylic paints so I figured that would be perfect. For subject matter I looked to what I had been seeing a lot of lately. As I study for finals in my room the two things I notice most out the window are the poppies that are blooming right now and the trees. Lately I have been obsessed by rapper and artists Action Bronson's paintings. These have bold colors and are very gestural. I wanted to do something inspired by that. (Examples included below.)

Materials: For this project I used only primary colors to mix my paint.

Process. After reading about Actions Bronson's "therapeutic process" I started with some reference photos. I added in the popy and worked upwards by adding contrasting and unifying colors. The blue contrasts the red making the poppies stand out the way they do in the landscape. Then to contrast the blue tree I made the sky green instead of a more typical blue. Next, to tie the painting back together and unify, I added the same purple and red used in the poppy for the canopy of the tree. I focused on keeping my brush strokes strong and visible to evoke more emotion and gesture to mimic Action Bronson's style.
