daydreams SI: Pedro's bay

For this sustained investigation (SI) I am exploring how I can capture what I daydream about using watercolors.

Pedro's bay

7 15/16'' x 9 15/16''

watercolor n gouache

For this painting, I was creating my idea of an idyllic tropical beach. First off a remote feeling was needed, nice and away from the crowds. The jungle foliage was super important for the whole tropical vibe. Finally, a soft sandy beach with some glassy tubes on the horizon. I used watercolors n gouache with black pen on top. To mess around with colors I used a piece of scrap paper to get the greens I was looking for. I started painting with broad color washes of green yellow and blue and progressively added detail on top.

I used line to create emphasis and unity. I used shape to create pattern and rhythm. I used color to create contrast. I used value and space to create emphasis on the beach and VW bus.

I can imagine this bus just arriving at this remote beach after a long trek through the jungle, n the driver is super stoked to get out of the sticky jungle and into the surf. I hope this peace relates to my life one day, this Is my ideal beach. I'm proudest of the plan leaves and the wave. I stuggled with getting the leaves in shadow dark enough. I mearly had to work with the color mixing longer to get the right color.
