graphite n' Sharpie

backside (I needed more paper to maker the correct number or circles)

For this project, I made 20 circles and drew whatever struck my fancy in them. After a couple of circles a theme developed, I was drawing lots of planetary things along with surf related things. I stuck with that feel through the rest of the peace. I titled the piece vibe portals because all the pieces are somewhat related, and your eye moves from one to the next making connections between them all. For materials, I started with simple graphite sketches. I then added some shading for depth and contrast. As a revision to make the piece feel more complete I added sharpie strokes to accentuate details and the main subject. I kept the sharpie strokes light and loose in most places to make sure the graphite wasn't overpowered.

My project relates to my life because I was focused on drawing things that I find interest in outside art: surfing, vans, nature planets, etc. My favorite aspect of this drawing is the way I created VW bus like figures with so few pencil strokes. I have broken down the figure to their fundamental shapes and lines. One thing I struggled with was getting soft enough sharpie strokes. To experiment with techniques I used some scrap paper; I found, that by slowly lowering my hand closer to the paper while moving in the shape of the line I want to make I got a thinner line. I used this technique in the drawing and I'm happy with the result.
