sweetening the sweet sky

(inspired by a jazz performance with Cecil Taylor on piano, Andrew Cyril on drums, Jimmy Lyons on alto at Hunter College, NYC)

the drummer resides

atop sweaty stool

deliberatin how to peel the ripened orange

chosen from his fruit basket

then he begins his solo

fingernail slicin a vertical line

North Pole rippin South

pellucidly,

the pulp reveals its hidden juices

and the hypnotic fragrance

becomes unbearable for Cecil and Jimmy

even more intoxicatin than roses

more fragrant than sandalwood

each slice of this perfect fruit

possessin its own incantation

and then Andrew slowly lifts a section toward his mouth

his breath breathin in the pungent orange kiss

as the moment intensifies:
