Not that it matters and I cannot find the review itself, but this posting mentions a negative review of Nobu's Tchai 1 performance with Yutaka Sado http://homepage1.nifty.com/alchemy/diary201305.html
Mr. Tsujii - Uninhibited
In the Chunichi Shimbun <Midday News>, reporter Hase Yoshitaka was vocal in his critique of the performance of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto by Nobuyuki Tsujii / Yutaka Sado. The cadenza playing was "too wild", unsuitable for classical music as a "reproduction art". Since I feel that Tsujii plays closely to the score of the classical music, this verdict was a little surprising. .. <translation of the rest is beyond me>
I wrote to Miyuki, a long-time Nobu fan in Japan, about this post, and she replied thus:
No, I haven't seen this review because 中日新聞 is one of the local newspapers in Japan and they don't sell it here (in Hiroshima). It seems like the reviewer (長谷義隆) is not even a real critic - he seems to be just one of the correspondents of this paper (I believe). I can't agree with either the correspondent or this blogger. I just can't imagine that Nobu adds so much of his own stuff to Tchaikovsky (especially his own cadenza). I seriously doubt the ability or the sense of hearing of these so-called "critics" people ... Anyway, I think this critique is something completely different from what BBC Phil people were saying and I have to say I believe the BBC people much more than this correspondent.
Well put, Miyuki!

There is also the tendency to be intended for transient evaluation for people to make money out of a weak content. For example, pianist Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii became a hot topic a while ago, because the media stressed his "blindness". Mass-produced people pay attention more because he is blind rather than his piano. -tweet

"Lang Lang: Popular classical music is great, too" Los Angles Times April 28 Arts section
When he <pianist Lang Lang> plays with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Hall in May, it will be Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1, a piece second perhaps only to Grieg in the most-played concerto table. For core classical music fans, playing popular pieces is nothing more than pandering to the lowest common denominator.
"I totally disagree," Lang says of this assertion. "A lot of what you call the great repertoire is popular, but that doesn't mean it's not a great work. I mean, come on. Rachmaninoff 3 is great. There shouldn't be 'If this work is so popular, then don't do it.' In the art world it is only what you feel right to perform."

I went to the Yutaka Sado BBC Philharmonic 2013 Japan tour concert.
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii's.
Concert was performed to an over-capacity audience that filled up to the 5th floor of Tokyo Bunka Kaikan in Ueno; tremendous applause; we were all thrilled. It has been a long time for a concert to receive such enthusiasm.
... To see Yutaka Sado conduct any work is good, but to see the collaboration with Nobuyuki Tsujii in a concerto for the first time, there was that breath and full-blown youthful humanity -- it was wonderful. More than what was shown on TV, seeing this pianist playing in the whole body, in a large venue, was really impressive. It was really good to hear this live performance. We seat on the third floor for the first time, but were able to fully enjoy the splendor of the acoustics of the hall, in the space of Maekawa architecture that does not change.

An amateur review of the Sapporo performance, with details about Nobu's performance.> Here is an excerpt:
Thus, Tsujii-san has made here three recitals and today is his second concerto. In addition to the overwhelming popularity with the audience at the concert at home and abroad after his 2009 competition after win. His"subsequent growth is significant," according to musicians and other critics. I was overwhelmed by the performance of today. This is the first time that the Rachmaninoff was play gorgeously from beginning to end, a great performance in a long time. I have listened to the concerto played by Rachmaninoff himself, Ashkenazi, Kissin and then CDs by 10 players such as Lang Lang, and the performance of 横山や清水 of Japan also left an impression. But the performance of Tsujii today brought out the majestic landscape depicted by Russian Rachmaninoff. It conveyed the image eloquently, such as a strong spirit of the people.

A lengthy article,in Japanese, about the BBC Philharmonic members looking back at the 311 earthquake/tsunami experience. It describes the disappointments the members experienced when the 2011 tour was disrupted, the guilt they felt when they were told by the Philharmonic's headquarter to return to U.K., and their strong desire to return to Japan.
Many musicians speak. Martin Warrington, violist, was quoted as saying that pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii helped to sell out tickets of all shows at launch.

Suntory, Yutaka Sado BBC Phil + Nobuyuki Tsujii again
Once again, BBC Philharmonic conductor Yutaka Sado's, a piano solo Nobuyuki Tsujii-kun,. Overture "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by Mendelssohn; Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz , and Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2. This time, my seat is near the orchestra's bass section, bind the trombonists; the conductor can be seen well from my seat. It is an interest poistion to listen from behind the orchestra, which I have done in the past.
Rachmaninoff began well , more than expected. It was really great. I can only recall twio perforances when a soloist from Japan is paired with an orchestra from overseas. It is hard to believe, but the musical synergy is excellent in a work that places quite stringent demand on great width swings and and tempo changes. It seems that the relationship of Tsujii-kun and and Sado-san is more than its 12 years. The piano and orchestra are really musically alighned.
Piano and orchestra are aligned musically really. I had not really listened to this concerto like this. Moreover, the beauty of the sound and the music of Mr. Tsujii stood out here.
While it is beautiful song anyway, I sincerely enjoyed the performance.
However, today, for me the highlight was the "fantastic"...

27 minutes 17 seconds 22:22 April 2013NEW!
... It was a concert that shakes one's heart really.
In particular, the Tchaikovsky piano concerto to be performed by Mr. Tsujii is a super super famous song that is not easily illuminated in words. ..
Start of the famous first movement, is suddenly tears.
(I'm sorry that I have borrowed the scene of the concert from the past http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qyJoHnpEVE <YouTube video of Nobu's performance with Sado, uploaded by me>)
I think maybe people around also might have been so.
Sniffles were heard.
He, I think went through a lot a lot of struggling that cannot be said in person.
But, I thought he was born in order to impress people.
With Tchaikovsky over, the encore was "farewell song" by Chopin.
Tsujii's piano, deep, courteous and accurate. It shakes your heart.
Tears again as I watched Mr. Tsujii hugged tightly by Sado.

I said so to many people, including the president of my office (who probably gave him the ticket to the concert). I have to apologize. I have been wrong after all "
He also wrote that the venue was overflowing - auxiliary chairs had to be set up, when too often there are empty seats at classical performances in recent years.

The wedding anniversary
It was our 16th wedding anniversary last weekend.
With grandma and children, we went to concert, after a long time as a married couple.
Mainly for the performance of Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2, co-starring Nobuyuki Tsujii, conductor Yutaka Sado, and the BBC Philharmonic.
This is my favorite concerto, and I cried even after listening to the performance of Mr. Tsujii at the Cliburn Comptition (for 18 times?)
...
During the performance , I ended up in tears involuntarily
From where in that little body of Tsujii -kun does he get his y energy like that ...
On stage in response to the applause of the tremendous after the performance.
The tall figure of Sado as parent leading a blind child walking back, with a smile.
Symphonie Fantastique of Berlioz ... was also a performance of great success.
It was a cold Sunday with frosty snow even in April, but now I feel like I should be doing fine for another year.

The program was solid.
Second concerto of Rachmaninoff.
Suddenly the spine was tinkled by the beauty of the sound.
However, as as the excitement rose, the piano was essential not heard.
The sound of the orchestra's going on, but the piano could not be heard.
I was annoyed about that.
Although Mr. Tsujii was playing hard, the sound was drowned out by the orchestra.
Whether there was too much sound from the orchestra, or the hal was too large, I do not know.

BBC Phil ,Yutaka Sado, Nobuyuki Tsujii in Hamamatsu
Mr. Yutaka Sado, who has been remarkable successful in recent years led the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the most prestigious in the UK. It was a concert that celebrated the rich charm of Nobuyuki Tsujii, piano soloist.
...
Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii was finally brought out by Mr. Yutaka Sado, his appearance greeted by thunderous applause.
"Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1" is a familiar masterpiece. As often happens, it was followed by thunderous applause at the end of the long first movement. When the performance was over, there was even standing ovation on the first floor. Tsujii played Rachmaninoff's Prelude Op.32-12 as encore and returned to stage two or three times to ringing applause.
I was impressed by the wonderful performance.
Tickets were sold out all the way through the fourth floor . It may have been that the majority of the audience of 2,300 people was there because "I want to see Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii."
<Editorial: According to a posting on the website of the Hamamatsu Cutural Foundatio, the encore that Nobu played was Tchaikovsky's Troika, not the Rachmaninov Prelude as this blogger wrote.>

Miyuki, long-time Nobu fan, wrote:
I want to write some of the stuff that I remember from reading the added afterword in the paperback version of Miracle of tone
One thing that I remember is that the past Cliburn winners have given recitals at Carnegie hall and it was often the case that they received severe criticism. Therefore, Nobu was feeling the pressure of "the honor of the Cliburn competition" when he gave Carnegie recital and he was unusually nervous. The other thing that I thought was impressive is that the piano is a close friend to Nobu, so when he is touring he is feeling like he is travelling with his friend. So, the hard schedule during his tour doesn't really bother him.
And Miyuki noticed a comment posted on the Itlaian GB Opera review about Nobu's April 8 performance in Turin, Italy
I wanted to read that wonderful review again. Then I saw this wonderful comment has been added after yours:
"Curnis is right in emphasizing the profound "humanitas" by Tsujii: intensely touching and moving was the performance that the young talent gave the Turin public, not only for their outstanding technical ability (a cascade of notes imprinted liquid that chills the soul), but also for the interpretation: pathetic, painful and poignant, worthy of the best Russian tradition.
And if the Sinfonia da La forza del destino I was not fully convinced, the direction of Valery Gergiev has been an extraordinary climax, which has touched the Akme with Wagner, as a catharsis after a night of strong emotions."
<Editorial: Nobu WAS a big hit in Turin - I hope he will perform more in Europe!>

I was amazed by the piano of Tsujii-kun.
Mr. Tsujii was born blind, and received numerous awards and competitions around the world, is a pianist of the moment.
I've been listening to many piano concerts. With the piano of Tsujii-kun, I feel that I have been subjected to the magic surrounding the venue
The atmosphere of the venue was different.
I think it was the sound of his piano playing, and the sight of him playing with his whole body rocking and his head swaying from side to side; I was in a world of the dark colors of Mr. Tsujii
The dim venue seemed filled with the sound of colorful flowers ...
When he finished playing, the venue erupted in great cheers and applause. His whole body radiated pleasure, and he lifted his fists in the air several times. It was very impressive. Tears ...

The Neck of Mr. Tsujii
Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii moves his neck when he is is playing the piano,
The saying movement is worrisome to me.
It seems a common feature among blind performers.
"That's the way" - perhaps because there is no filtering.
I think we can say that this is a method of free expression (^ O ^)

... gave a great demonstration of accuracy and depth of interpretation ... the Piano Concerto No.1 of Tchaikovsky was brought to the fore by Nobuyuki Tsujii, the Japanese pianist, and winner of the 13th Van Cliburn International piano competition. He is a musical prodigy, not only for the naturalness of phrasing and technical mastery, but because, being blind from birth, does not see the keyboard, yet never misses a jump in lightning fast movements of the hand. Without seeing the conductor, he is always precisely in sync with the orchestra. There were those who objected to the sound: a little too dry. Or the lyricism a little restrained. Perhaps so; but the execution has been, after all, compelling, and even more so in the acrobatic encore performance of Rigoletto Paraphrase by Liszt...

My point is that I strongly suspect that his digital key-stroke cycle must be infinitesimally shorter than most other players, and that this being like an athletic reflex, it can only be attained when the student is till vey young, definitely before juvenile age, after which, I further maintain, it can no longer be corrected. So Nobu must have a very good teacher who was fully about the sound quality, like Zakhar Bron and his student, Maxim Vengerov, are for Violin.

... The book "Miracle Tone of Nobuyuki Tsujii", which has been publishes less than two years ago in 2011 (published by Ascom, Author Ikko Kanbara) has now been published in paperback!
I win a spot on the two books, by way of my 12 years of association with Nobuyuki Tsujii. This book touches on my own upbringing and interviews with me. The book was triggered by a NHK TV special "Gene of the Mind".
I picked up a copy of the new book today and opened it immediately. On page 26 of this edition, there is a new afterword. I could feel the enthusiasm of author Mr. Ikko KanbaraI, who is an NHK director. Mr. Kanbara describes the coverage of Nobuyuki Tsujii flying around the world. I feel the gentle contact with love in his description of the profession of a pianist. I think reading this will make a lot of people very happy too...

Here is something to share with all of you.
Below youtube video is about Nobuyuki Tsujii, he is a famous pianist from Japan.
<YouTube video of Nobu performing La Campanella>
He swims, he travels, he hikes on the mountains and he is the winner of 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.
He received the gold medal along with Haocheng Zhang, from China.
And you know what...........?
He is blind since birth.
If someone who has been blind for his entire life could swim, climb up the mountains, travel around and play piano international level ......
Those who have able body should be able to do more, can't they?
What is stopping us?
Nothing.
We just need to try.

Nobuyuki Tsujii Piano Concert
Thanks to my one of my awesome friend, Serina, I got to know about one of the world famous pianists, Nobuyuki Tsujii from Japan.
According to his profile, he is blind since his birth and joint Gold Medal winner at the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He is an inspirational musician with a formidable technique and natural gift for pianistic color.
His best-selling discs in recent years--- Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2, an all-Chopin recitals, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1.
(Translation of the last paragraph, which is written in Korean:
The great finesse of playing style,
the sincere passion of his playing -- these I felt.
What's more, it was cool that he played with such happiness.
Now, I would like to try to play the works of Chopin better!)

Finally - after all my whining about no news from Florida -- a news article from Florida, and not only does it mention things that we already know, but that Peter Rosen (maker of A surprise in Texas) is indeed working on a documentary all about Nobu! And according to the article it will be aired on our PBS (Public Broadcast System) early 2014!
Here is an excerpt from the article, published in www.TCPalm.com:
The documentary will be a behind-the-scenes look at touring, rehearsals and travel.
Part of the filming will take place at the Florida Oceanographic Society on Saturday morning, where Rosen and Jeannie Moon, business manager at Florida Oceanographic, hope Tsujii will enjoy the atmosphere and the various sensory exhibits.
“We thought it’d be an interesting experience. He really likes to experience different environments,” said Rosen, who accompanied Tsujii to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and onto boat docks in Maine.
Rosen isn’t just impressed with Tsujii’s talent, however. He’s also impressed with him as a person. Tsujii has overcome what many would consider a disability to become a world-renowned pianist and composer and someone who is willing to give back.
Tsujii has performed many benefit concerts for the victims of Japan’s tsunami and earthquake and has dedicated his current tour to those same people.
Tsujii’s performance at the Lyric will include pieces by Chopin and DeBussy and a piece that he composed as a tribute to the tsunami and earthquake victims.
“He’s really a role model. He’s a symbol of hope,” Rosen said.
Rosen’s documentary is scheduled to air on PBS early next year.

As an avid fan of Nobuyuki Tsujii, I read your well-written article with interest.
I have been following the phenomenon of Nobuyuki Tsujii for over two years, as a labor of love. Your Japanese wife is absolutely right about what a "steal" it was for the folks of Rockport to get to enjoy a world-class pianist close-up at such a bargain price. I myself have traveled around the world to enjoy many of his priceless performances. In Japan, Nobu performed the same recital that you heard 28 times in sold-out venues, each of which seats more than a thousand people.
Why would Nobu come to perform in small towns like Rockport in the U.S.? In an eulogy for Mr. Van Cliburn, who passed away recently, Nobu said that among the things that Mr. Cliburn told him is that Van Cliburn Competition medalists have a responsibility to attract people to classical music.
Nobu has been doing just that, tirelessly. Not only does he perform in venerable venues such as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, but he travels to small towns -- the equivalents of Rockport -- in far flung corners in Japan, including, and frequently so, the Tohoku region that was devastated by the 2011 earthquake. In his own country, Nobu has already succeeded in attracting many to classical music. Unfortunately, it is a different story in the U.S. As you noted, it is up to us -- young or old -- to take advantage of the opportunities to enjoy an art form that has sadly fallen out of favor in this country. I hope we reward the efforts of Mr. Tsujii and others who promote the pleasure of classical music.
Thank you for bringing attention to this most remarkable young artist.
By the way, if your wife has not already mentioned this to you, Mr. Tsujii posted a "recital report" for his Rockport performance, which you can read here: http://www.nobupiano1988.com/recitalreport/
And here you can read an amusing tidbit of what he left behind in your town https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151466805529407&l=170ddb4c99

Woa, this guy has a true balance between his right and left hand in dexterity, which is very rare even among many of so called celebrated professional pianists. This perfect balance may be contributing to the way this piece even sounds! Also, his arpeggio cascata goes very smooth indeed, left or right. These factors may be contributing to the beauty of the sounds he consistently produces...Thanks again for sharing this piece.

http://blog.semilshah.com/2013/03/19/the-music-passes-through-me/ A March 19 blog post by a technology writer in U.S.:
... you should check out this video of Japanese piano prodigy Nobuyuki Tsujii. He’s just over 20 years old, blind, and began piano at age 2. When you watch this short video below of him playing, it’s clear that he is talented, no doubt. But, he also didn’t learn to play music by sight reading or watching videos. I remember learning instruments growing up, with an easel and music stand to follow along the notes. Every now and then, I would be able to memorize some notes, but the manner in which I learned was based on sight, and therefore it impacted my ability to channel it. For someone like Tsujii, however, he’s never seen music, and when you watch this performance, it is crystal clear that he doesn’t play the notes — but that the notes pass through him. He is a talent beyond all others. No one could learn to play this particular music with this level of care and precision in this moment in time... <The video referred to is Nobuyuki Tsujii Liszt La Campanella,2009 Tokyo Opera City>

I went to a lecture "Miracle of tone" by the mother of the blind pianist Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii. Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii was born blind with the rare condition of "microphthalmia" , which affected the development of his eyes. It is a condition that makes him not even able to feel the light at all. So, the mother looked hard for "beautiful things". My son do not see me. My does not know the distinction between day and night, because he does not sense light. Day and night are reversed for him, and he became hypersensitive to sound. He feared loud soud and would cry loudly in reaction. It was a daily occurrence that made it impossible to do daily shopping with him. I was stuck, and sought help somewhere.
His mother sought salvation in books. She as particularly impressed with a book called "Phlox my eyes". It depicts the life of a guide dog for someone completely blind.
She wrote a letter of thanks, and a reply came.
The advice from the author: "You should try to bring him up normally, the same way as other parents". She took him to see the cherry blossoms, not only to see the flowers. but Feel the wind, smell the cherry blossoms. He enjoys the sound of the petals falling. And one day, the mother heard Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii asked. "Mom, what color is today's wind? "
Sometimes, we should close our eyes and feel with our five senses.

Wow! Why have I only just become aware of this???
The clip above is a video of Japanese pianist and composer Nobuyuki Tsujii playing ‘La Campanella’ or the third of six ‘Grandes etudes de Paganin’ at Tokyo Opera City in 2009.
Despite the complexity of the piece of music there’s seemingly nothing out of the ordinary except that Tsujii was born blind!
The performance is breathtaking in technique and power but also staggering when related to WOK Sense Perception in ToK. How, for instance, does Tsujii ‘know’ where the keys are if he can’t see them? How has the brain been able to ‘construct’ the position of the keys in his head so that he can play the piece of music?
An amazing video, well worth watching
<The video referred to is Nobuyuki Tsujii Liszt La Campanella,2009 Tokyo Opera City -- not sure what those acronyms WOK and ToK are all about.>

Comment on YouTube video: Nobuyuki Tsujii 辻井伸行 風がはこんできたもの "What the Wind Brings"
I do not like this at all, reminiscing of the "cheap feel" of richard Claiderman of earstwhile fame. f Tsujii continues on this track, his compositional talents would have to be questioned, albeit his performances of great composers are great. What's wrong with his compositions, in my view, is the superficial glitter-chases with no or little soulful meditative inference quality or depth. He better quit chasing the audience attraction emphais, or he would degenerate into a cabaret entertainer.
My reply:
I understand your sentiment and I felt the same two years ago. But I have been observing Nobu for a long time now, and have met him in person several times since then.
As much as some of us would like to cast him in the mold of a Rubinstein or Kissin, he is not. Nobu is, at heart, a performer - he enjoys performing for the pleasure of others. And he is completely without pretension. He is what he is, an extraordinary artist that cannot be measured by common standard.

Tsujii, who has been blind since birth, came to international prominence when he won the gold medal at the Van Cliburn Competition in 2009, the first blind pianist to have done so.

Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii
On a cold day, I watched recordings made from a WOWOW broadcast.
" Nobuyuki Tsujii Carnegie Hall debut live" with the Beethoven Piano Sonata "The Tempest" and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" .
In the past, I sensed that this person really likes the piano, and that he is very serious and demanding on the piano. Listening to the performance, my impression is a little bit reversed.
Because of his "blindness", the sound coming from the movement of the fingers - which strike very carefully over the keys - has a rustic feel.
Although he is not as flashy <as other pianists>, I was really pulled into the unique world of Tsujii really.
And, it feels like Tsujii has a rapport in the air with the audience
Tsujii feel you are playing with the audience to feel the air,
I wonder if his charm is also part of that sense of unity ...
I think both.
I also watched another recording, "Nobuyuki Tsujii x Gergiev Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 ". Conductor Mr. Gergiev ...
When he was young was a little weak
Watching him for the first time in a long time, it was pretty good
Mr. Tsujii was playing Tchaikovsky with a sense of youthful dynamism
However, when it comes to the first of Tchaikovsky, there is a recording that I happen to think is unassailable. The 1988 recording of Berlin Philharmonic / Herbert von Karajan Piano / Evgeny Kissin - it was a performance that devastated me. The recording is at my father's home. I think I will go take a look.

ATSUSHI and Nobuyuki Tsujii deliver "song of hope"
ATSUSHI (age 32) of <rock band> EXILE teams with blind pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii (24), will release a work called "EXILE ATSUSHI & Nobuyuki, Still we Live" on May 1.
The glamorous co-starring occurs two years since the earthquake on March 11, 2011. The song was originally played by Mr. Tsujii as encore at a concert in Boulder, Colorado, played; it was an improvisation for the victims. Since then, the song has often been played as encore at his performances.
Last fall, while traveling by car in the disaster area, Tsujii heard a song "home" sung by ATSUSHI, and was impressed.
"His gentle voice and singing skills are perfect for this piece of mine," he said at the end of last year, and asked for a production with signing lyrics. ATSUSHI readily agreed.
The first half of the work is a recollection, the second half is the theme of hope, the melody and lyrics gradually becoming strong, the song is finished in a positive frame of mine.
ATSUSHI breathes new life into the singing. He said enthusiastically, "I think Tsujii wrote the song from strong feelings about those who have been affected, and I wrote the lyrics to continue to speak to that feeling, and I was allowed to sing"

DVD of Tsujii
As I wrote in the last issue of the newsletter, it would be ideal to see how Nobuyuki Tsujii play in a live performance, but the opportunity to do so is hard to come by, and I do not often seen on TV.
Therefore, I looked for the DVD, and there was a DVD of live performance at Carnegie Hall.
"Full edition" Carnegie Hall debut Nobuyuki Tsujii LIVE [DVD]
As you know, Mr. Tsujii is visiually impaired, but it does not matter. I think there are a lot of movement of the wrist and elbow, and fingers judgment without waste. Of course, there is a very delicate way of expression in his music as well. I learned a lot. He is still in the process of growing, and is one of the pianists to watch in the future.
By all means, I recommend this DVD for your collection.
