Hats off to the marketing genius of Avex Classics. I think they may have a winning duo in Nobuyuki Tsujii and violinist Miura Fumiaki. These two have been together on a 13-day "究極の協奏曲 Ultimate Concertos"tour in Japan this month (February 16 through 28th), and I don't think it's a coincidence that they both perform on the soundtrack of the ongoing NHK period drama series『真田丸』Sanada Maru, an album of which has just been released on February 24. And there has been a publicity blitz. Judging from comments on the web, this promotion is a big hit, and Nobu may have found a popular performing partner in young Miura Fumiaki.

In the U.S., some people just can't seem to look past a small handful of "big names" when it comes to classical music concerts. Nobuyuki Tsujii is opening the Minnesota Beethoven Festival with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra on June 25, and this Winona Daily News article Winona's Beethoven Festival ticket packages go on sale March 1 did not even mention Nobu (nor the orchestra) -- it's disrespectful and downright insulting! Boo to Winona Daily News!
"Festival ticket packages for the 2016 Minnesota Beethoven Festival go on sale Tuesday, March 1, featuring headliner violinist Joshua Bell and several other internationally acclaimed performers.
The 2016 season includes nine different performances from June 25 to July 17, featuring Bell, The King's Singers, pianist Richard Goode, the Shanghai Quartet, recorder/guitar duo Michala Petri and Lars Hannibal, Dale Warland and the Festival Chorale, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Nobu was on the show for only 25 minutes. The "Emperor" was shown in fragments, and none of the "Pathetique" encore was shown. My devious mind suspects that this appearance was a clever teaser to drum up interest for Nobu's upcoming Beethoven-themed tour with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. ^_^

Yet another person has become awe-struck by Nobu's 2013 BBC Proms performance. This blogger is "a retired professor, living in a small town in the Pacific Northwest (U.S.A.) and it seems that she is of Japanese descent, but she apparently did not know about Nobu at all.
I listened to Rachmaninov’s piano performance of his own creation and then some more; yet what astonished me more than any accomplished pianists’ performances was a blind Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii’s performance of Rachmaninov’s concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Here was this young person who was obviously blind playing one of the most difficult piano concerts beautifully while pouring out all his emotions and energy. By the time he finished the entire concert 33 minutes or so later I was truly moved: he made me think of humanity’s immense possibility. In a way, it is understandable that a blind person, deprived of visual perception, excels in his musical/ auditory ability. Then, I started thinking about the concept of self-identity, prompted by his mannerism that suggests the absence of self-consciousness (I may be utterly wrong here).
According to the French psychiatrist and psychoanalytical theorist Jacques Lacan, humans form self-identity (no matter how fictive or distorted it may be) by going through the mirror state when babies begin to recognize themselves reflected on the mirror. After seeing Nobuyuki Tsujii perform I began to wonder how blind people, such as Mr. Tsujii who was born blind, form their self-identity. I wondered if a blind musician, for instance Mr. Tsujii, has a musical score or melody that he thinks defines him.

On February 10, Nobu fan Yura posted a tweet with a short clip showing Nobu playing "boogie woogie" for encore with one of the co-performers in a "Pianist" concert in 2014. it was re-tweeted by Winnipeg's Classic 107 radio with the comment "Nobu shows that he can swing!"

Some of us are not fond of Nobu performing this kind of music, but I am glad that he seems happy and having fun doing it. Nobu will perform in in the "Pianist" series again this summer.

In early March, the orchestra will tour Germany under its chief conductor, Michael Sanderling. They will perform Dvořák's Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" and Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto in the Berlin Philharmie, the Cologne Phiharmonie and at the Philharmonie München (Gasteig). The Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii will accompany the orchestra as a soloist.

My Sunday morning was brightened by reading this morning's tweets.
The NHK's period drama series『真田丸』Sanada Maru was aired last night in Japan and as usual there are people who just realized that the ending theme "Journey" is performed by none other than Mr. Tsujii! Following is one of the many similar tweets.
ＮＨＫの真田丸を終わりのところ10分ぐらい見た。各地の歴史跡地を流すけど、どこも貴重だ場所だと思うし、この映像も貴重だと思う。で、ＢＧＭ演奏が、辻井伸行氏だった！！！知らんかった。 来週も観るわ。
I saw about 10 minutes at the end of the Sanada round of NHK. It went through the history of the sites around, I think everywhere is a precious place, I think that the footage is valuable. In, BGM playing was Nobuyuki Tsujii! ! ! I didn't know. I will watch next week.

I have been listening to the sound of Mr. Tsujii for the last three days, and the way I see him has completely changed. In particular, it was impressive how he responded to the sound of Yomikyo (the orchestra) and adjusted his performance to fit smoothly. At the end of the performance Mr. Tsujii turned to applaud the orchestra. I have not been so moved by music for a long time.

I wonder if blind pianist Mr. Tsujii is not actually seen, he would be evaluated differently. Piano playing without looking does require some degree of skill. But playing blind is the same as the playing of a personal computer.

So I had to chime in.

According to this news article, Nobu will make his debut at the "21st Miyazaki International Music Festival" in Miyazaki Prefecture this May, with conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy. Details may be available in a subscriber article -- under investigation. Nobu and conductor Ashkenazy are also scheduled to perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in Sydney in October.

「第 ２１回宮崎国際音楽祭」（宮崎県、県立芸術劇場主催）の概要が２日、発表された。４月２９日～５月１５日、宮崎市のメディキット県民文化センターを主会場 に開催する。世界的ピアニストで指揮者のウラディーミル・アシュケナージさんが１４年ぶり２回目の登場。今回は全盲のピアニスト辻井伸行さんが初出演し、 アシュケナージさんと共演する。室内楽やオペラなどのほか、ワンコインで入場できる企画など新たな試みを含む全１４公演を開く。
A summary of "The 21st Miyazaki International Music Festival" (Miyazaki Prefecture,sponsored by the Prefectural Arts Theatre) was announced on the 2nd. Held April 29 - May 15, its main venue will be the Miyazaki Prefectural Cultural Center. The global pianist will reunite with Conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy since their joint performances in 2014. Nobu does not usually do autographs, for a good reason - it takes him considerable effort to do so ... and then when he does make an exception, people turn around and sell it for profit. It saddens me.
