A documentary about the Japanese tour of the Symphony on the RÚV

On Tuesday evening at. 20:05 RÚV will show a documentary about the tour of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Japan in the fall of 2018. The orchestra hosted twelve full-house concerts in eleven cities with Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, led by Vladimir Ashkenazy, the chief honorary director of the orchestra. The documentary follows the orchestra's exploration of the country during the first days of the trip, at practice, concerts and unexpected events in exotic places.

Chopin - Andante spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante in E-flat major Op.22

Yesterday (Jan 14) in Tokyo, Nobu played a orchestrated version of this well-known piece at his 2019 Super Soloist concer, I believe for the first time.

American pianist Linda wrote that she wasn't even aware that there is an orchestra version.

Chopin initially wrote the work for an orchestra - as explained here =>

https://www.allmusic.com/composition/andante-spianato-and-grande-polonaise-for-piano-orchestra-op-22-mc0002362835

And as with his concertos, the piano is the focus and the orchestra's accompaniment is rather superficial.

"This effort, incidentally, marked the last time that Chopin composed anything for orchestra."  As with other orchestral works by Chopin, the piano is front and center and the orchestra play a minor role

I would love to have been at the Bunkamura yesterday to hear it.

What the Wind Carries 風がはこんできたもの

I was happy to read that Nobu played 風がはこんできたもの[What the Wind Carries] in the "Pianist!" concerts in Tokyo this past weekend, so I dug up a 2011 video and extracted footage of Nobu playing the piece for the first time, as an impromptu at the end of a visit with an esteemed Japanese playwright 倉本聰 Sō Kuramoto in Hokkaido. Nobu recorded a rendition of it in his 2011 Original Works album. I have always had a fondness for this piece. The original rendition is more muscular; the recorded track more sweet sorrow.  More at Nobuyuki Tsujii: 風がはこんできたもの "What the wind carries"

ANA Airways Magazine interview Nobuyuki Tsujii - Part 2

Around Christmas last year, we were treated to an excellent interview published in the inflight magazine of the All-Nippon Airways (ANA), a major sponsor of Nobu's concerts.

Little did I know that there would be a part 2, which just came out, again with great photos.

The original Japanese version is at https://www.ana.co.jp/ja/jp/promotion/ready-for-take-off/tsujii-nobuyuki_part2/

In this part of the interview, Nobu talks about his friendship with violinist Fumiaki Miura and the ARK classics concerts that they co-chaired last summer; the diversity of the music he performs and the importance of drawing new audiences to classical music. And,"Ultimately, Nobu is a classical pianist, but by continuing to experiment with other genres, he is able to accelerate his musical growth." And this: "Nobu’s plans for 2020 and beyond are inexorably linked to his relationship with classical music." Thank goodness!

"THANK YOU from ALL Nobu fans!!"

Those of us who follow Nobu's career would recognize him instantly: a handsome, slim, neatly dressed gentleman who seems always to be by the side of our beloved pianist.

It is a familiar sight: Mr. Asano, dressed in dark, appears with Nobu on stage, guiding him to the piano in gracious choreographed movements, and then quietly steps back into the wings or behind the piano.

Nobuyuki Tsujii is a passion of mine (as a fan, that is ^_^) since 2010, and Mr. Asano has been a major enabler of that passion. It was through the good grace of Mr. Asano that I have been able to gain access to greet Nobu backstage after his concerts.

My acquaintance with Mr. Nick Asano began in 2010, when I ran into Nobu and him at the San Francisco International Airport, on our separate paths to a Nobu recital in Northern California. They were in a rush as I rudely approached, "introducing" myself to Nobu. Instead of giving me the cold shoulder that I so deserved, Mr. Asano was friendly and receptive from the start.

Sadly, Mr. Asano has now parted ways with Avex Classics (Nobu's record label); the trip to the U.S. this past September (with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) was the last time that Mr. Asano would be traveling with Nobu for Avex.

I cannot describe the sadness that has descended on me since I heard the news, not just for myself, but for Nobu, who has called Mr. Asano his "father on tour", and a "very good father."

With his permission, I have posted a tribute to express my thanks to Mr. Asano personally, as well as on behalf of all Nobu fans.

It can be read here, if you please => "Mr. Asano, THANK YOU from ALL Nobu fans!!"

♪ DEC 27 A new CM (commercial, promotion video)!

Daiwa Securities Group (a major sponsor of Nobu's concerts): "There are no places that cannot be reached. A story of believing in possibilities"

Mrs. Tsujii posted about the CM in her blog.  She wrote that the CM started airing on the 28th nationwide, and that there's anotherCM featuring free climber Keiyo Noguchi

In the CM, Nobu is juxtaposed with a young man (presumably a Daiwa employee).  Nobu practices on the piano; the young man types furiously on his computer.  Nobu is escorted to a concert hall.  The young man arrives at a fancy office building.  Nobu is on stage for a performance; the young man arrives at a business meeting.  Nobu plays on the piano; the young man makes a presentation.  The young man's presentation earns nods from his seated bosses; Nobu won enthusiastic applause.  End with the slogan on screen "Passion for the best" [This is grammatically correct unlike the "Be Best" slogan of a certain First Lady.]  The CM is posted on the Daiwa website and also on YouTube
