I was especially surprised by the unusual participation of Nobuyuki Tsujii from the classical world, but I was also happy with the service spirit of his playing "Moonlight" and it was a performance that really touched my heart. ♪ Coming to PBS in May 2020: Nobuyuki Tsujii "Touching the Sound"
I was fortunate enough to be among the first who saw the film "Touching the Sound, the Improbable Journey of Nobuyuki Tsujii" when it premiered in New York City in April 2014. It is the third production about Nobuyuki Tsujii by renowned documentary maker Peter Rosen, preceded by the 2009 Cliburn Competition documentary "A Surprise in Texas" and the 2011 film Nobuyuki Tsujii live at Carnegie Hall.
"Touching the Sound" is a portrait of Nobuyuki Tsujii up to year 2013 (age 25). It has been screened worldwide, most recently at the Musee Guimet in Paris on January 12 2020. In the U.S., it is being shown nationwide for the first time, next month (May 2020), on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) stations.
Time flies. Six years have passed since the premiere of this film, since when the star of Nobuyuki Tsujii has further risen, especially in his native Japan. The film is a nostalgic lookback of Nobu's early days. Among other points of interest: you will see Nobu's childhood family photos; footage explaining how he learns music without being able to see a music score; scenes of his U.S. performances -- his Carnegie Hall debut recital and his 2013 U.S. tour; and an endearing closing scene of Nobu -- in shorts and tee shirt -- wading into the Atlantic Ocean. There is also footage of the 2011 earthquake/tsunami that devastated eastern Japan, and of the homage paid by Nobu to the victims.
This is a quietly affecting film that should help to uplift spirits in these trying days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

♪ 2020 Japan Tour with Vasily Petrenko & RLPO cancelled
The Japan tour of "Vasily Petrenko conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra & Nobuyuki Tsujii (piano)was scheduled for September 13-21 2020
We have held continued discussions with all parties concerned to implement the tour, but due to the judgment that it will be difficult for artists from overseas to come to Japan, we will cancel the performance.
We deeply apologize to the customers who were looking forward to the performance, and we ask for your understanding.
This is sad news for us Nobu fans, but even more so for the Liverpool Phil and all orchestras -
Nobu is re-scheduled to perform with the RLPO in Liverpool next year, but the fate of this Japan tour is highly doubtful, given Mo. Petrekno is ending his tenure with the orchestra after the 2020-21 season.

Nobu, his hair slicked back and spotting a silky black jacket with golden sheen, is playing "Close to You" on a grand piano, with popular songstress Seiko Matsuda and an ensemble of characters (dancers & musicians) shown as miniature figures perched on the sound board, performing directly in front of Nobu.

Karaoke, anyone? (Nobuyuki Tsujii is said to be a Karaoke fan.)
Latest video posted on the Nobuyuki Tsujii 辻井伸行official YouTube Channel, a rendition of a song 「春よ、来い」"Come, Spring" by venerated Japanese singer/composer Yuming Yumi Matsutoya (松任谷由实)-- age 66. I believe it's a famous song in Japan, to be sung along with lyrics displayed on screen; but it is an acquired taste for the rest of us :-)
(Nobu loves these old-fashioned songs ... this video is right up his alley, even if it might not appeal to classical music purists :-)

In the accompanying photo, Nobuyuki Tsujii, smiling, is holding a sumptuous bouquet of pink roses/carnations and lavender orchids. Nobu (slightly unshaven) is wearing a nifty long-sleeve striped shirt over blue jeans. He is standing in a loft, by a piano, a stairway behind him.
I believe this is the first time in many years that Nobu is home on Mother's Day (instead of performing overseas).

Usually Nobu is on tour overseas in May. I remember he was performing in Germany one yea on Mother's Day. I was there too and I remember that Mr. Asano thank me for reminding him and Nobu that it was Mother's Day!

Hey, my go-to classical music station Classical KUSC (USC=University Southern California) just played Nobuyui Tsujii's La Campanella, without mentioning his blindness (perhaps good) nor the upcoming screening of "Touching the Sound" on KCET (not so good; lost opportunity).
But it was such a thrill to catch Nobuyuki Tsujii mentioned on my local station!! ^_^

Nobu made his appearance on TVTokyo last night, gave a message (in Japanese, of course) and then played an improvisation "笑顔で会える日のために We will smile together again".
A video of the appearance is posted on the Nobuyuki Tsujii 辻井伸行official YouTube Channel that I told you about a couple days ago.
In the clip, Nobu is dressed in black long sleeve shirt and black trousers, his hair neatly groomed and looking healthy and cheerful as always.
If a translation of what Nobu says shows up, it will be posted at Nobuyuki Tsujii on TVTokyo: "We will smile together again"

YouTubeでピアニスト辻井伸行氏の演奏を見る。余りの素晴らしい演奏に、涙が出てくる。彼の指は、彼の心、そのままだ。目が見えないハンデを、彼は耳の記憶で充分過ぎる程に、乗り越える。それをひたすらの演奏技術の練習によって獲得した指が、ピアノの鍵盤に伝える。ピアノが歌いだす。なにか、違うものを聞いている気分になる。この世のものでない世界に誘われる。涙が溢れる。こういう人を天才っていうのかな。#イラスト好き
Watched the pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii's wonderful performances on YouTube. Tears. His fingers are his heart. He overcame the handicap of blindness by superb hearing. Fingers acquire performance technique through practice. The piano begins to sing. I feel like I have heard something different. You are invited to a world that is not part of this world. Tears overflow. I wonder if such a person is called a genius. #IllustrationOfLove

I came upon this today in my news search: A Nobuyuki Tsujii "辻井伸行 Official Channel" on YouTube.
It looks official, but currently has no video.
Intriguing. Conceivably this can be a platform for streaming live recitals/duets of Nobu until concerts come back, which reportedly may not happen until at the earliest late this year.
Something to keep an eye on.

例によって「BBC Proms」でYouTubeを検索し、視聴回数で並べ替えをしてみると、意外なことが分かった。最も視聴されている動画は、威風堂々でも映画音楽でもない。何と日本人が演奏しているのだ。
"I searched YouTube on 'BBC Proms' by number of views, & the outcome was surprising. The most watched video is neither nationalistic (Elgar at final night) nor film music. But performance by a Japanese!"
Yup. I might add that there are many other copies of this video on YouTube, but the main one, cited by the article, has had 12.5 million views :-)
