Nobuyuki Tsujii debuts in Austria, Spring 2012

<<This page is linked to Critics' Reviews>>

UPDATE: In July 2012, a YouTube video of excellent quality appeared of Nobu's performance of Beethoven's Tempest Sonata at Waidhofen, Austria:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24OPuC09fVc

On Friday March 16, 2012, Nobuyuki Tsujii made his debut in the homeland of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.  He opened a festival at the picaresque  Rothschilds' Castle where the  governor and the Japan Ambassador were on hand.  Judging from web postings, the debut was a huge success -- and Nobu was warmly welcome.

Nobu wrote in his recital report that he received  a lot of media attentions there (two TV stations including the national TV, radio station and a newspaper) -- and you can read the resulting articles (with translation) here -- it is a cornucopia of unexpected treasures!  Nobu aspires to perform with the Vienna Philharmonic someday -- I hope this recital will be remembered by the good people in Austria and especially those in Vienna (Wien)

To my ears, it is one of the best performances of Nobu that I have listened to.  He was truly in his elements that evening, buoyed by the warm welcome that he had received from the Austrians and the Japanese community. He played the works with an unequaled fluidity and delicateness.  I , not a big fan of Mussorgsky's famous suite, even enjoy listening to this "Pictures at an Exhibition"  But I think it's actually his "Rigoletto" that brought the house down - better than ever!

Der unbeschreibliche Duft von Liptauer (The Indescribable scent of cheese spread) -- an article that describes the warm welcome that Nobu received from the local community -- including Mr. Karl Piaty, a famous confectioner with long-time tie to Tokyo -- and Japanese  luminaries, including the Japan Ambassador.

WAIDHOFEN / YBBS (MiW) What a venerable opening of the sound space Waidhofner festivals:

To kick off the city invited the piano prodigy Nobuyuki Tsujii a - a blind from birth, musical genius from Japan.

On this occasion, Mayor Wolfgang Mair welcomed addition to Governor Erwin Pröll, Member of Parliament and St Anton Kasser Pöltener artist Leopold Kogler and the Japanese Ambassador, Shigeo Iwatani its excellence.

After listening to piano sonatas composed by Robert Schumann <Mozrt, actually>, Ludwig van Beethoven, Modest Mussorgsky, then you went to the castle hosts Andi Plappert, who flattered the palate with Far Eastern delicacies.

The soundstage Festival shines through and including 24 June, with fine music, ...

To express my gratitude, I left this comment with the article -

From California, U.S.A.: Congratulations to the festival  for a triumphant opening. As an admirer of pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, I followed the event with keen interest, and was rewarded with many wonderful articles such as this one, from Austria. Yesterday I was even able to listen to the performance on oe1.ORF. Being so warmly welcome in the homeland of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart means a lot to Mr. Tsujii, who aspires to one day perform with the venerable Vienna Philharmonic.

To my delight, the author Michael Permoser posted a response, as follows:

As a big fan of classical music too, for me it was a great experience and pleasure to listen to nobuyuki tsujii too - indeed, he's an outstanding master on the piano.

Everytime he finished his play and everybody in the whole room hold on his breath, I got goose bumps!

Summing up: It was an amazing conzert with an amazing artist.

For sure, Austria will welcome Mr. Tsujii with wide open arms and hearts everytime he'll visit our country and give us the delight to listen to his music.

I had the final word:

Danke schön - thank you from the bottom of my heart, Michael! I am honored by your prompt response to my comment.

Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii himself left Austria with very good memory, as you can read in his own "recital report" (in Japanese and with excellent photos) of his visit to Weidhofen, here on his official website -- http://www.nobupiano1988.com/recitalreport/index.h...

Your description of the experience at his concert is excellent. I feel exactly the same whenever I attend the concerts of Mr. Tsujii. I was in Vienna not long ago, and was charmed by the city and by the good people of Austria. When Tsujii-san returns to Austria in the future and performs with the Wiener Philharmoniker, I will be among the first to purchase tickets.

This review appeared in Austrian publication NÖN -- it is about a recital given by Nobuyuki Tsujii on Friday March 16, 201,

in Weidhofen, Austria.  The recital was Nobu's debut in Austria. (The original  article was found  at  http://www.noen.at/lokales/noe-uebersicht/amstetten/kultur/Klaviermusik-mit-Tiefgang;art2382,380540

Piano Music with Depth (Klaviermusik mit Tiefgang)

by VON LEOPOLD KOGLER

03.20.2012 | 08:03 |

WAIDHOFEN / The program of the opening concert of the "Sound Space" festival was shaped by the individual needs of the exceptional pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii, who plays what he likes simply. He consistently pursues one goal: The audience will feel and see what he sees within himself.

Tsujii has been blind since birth. And you could literally FEEL that he planted his art as an inner sight. It was a great evening.

His presentations were Robert Schumann <actually Mozart's!!> Piano Sonata No. 11, Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 17 and Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and three wonderful encores that include an original composition. <According to Nobu's own recital report, the encores were: Chopin's nocturne no. 8, Liszt's Rigoletto paraphrase and his own "Still we Live.">

His desire to make tangible, through his art, his inner sight -- engaged and fascinated the audience. The individual pieces were conveyed  vividly. The Japanese pianist was in his element, and his delivery was sensitive and powerful.

With incredible precision, he built up soundscapes. It was music that breathes, which gives time for reflection, his brilliance sends the heart soaring and increases the pulse rate. Standing ovations from the enthusiastic audience (as shown in an accompanying photo, captioned "GREAT  beginning of the festival soundscape -- Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii Waidhofen gave a powerful concert.")

Blind pianist thrilled audiences worldwide

The Japanese Nobuyuki Tsujii is a special piano player - 23 years old, and blind, but already the world's major concert halls in the guest. On Friday night he gave his first concert in Austria - at the festival "sound space" in Waidhofen Ybbs.

Tsujii begins with Mozart's concert career in Austria. It all began at the age of two years, Jingle Bells, says the pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii: "My mother recognized my talent, I bought a toy piano and I played everything that I liked."

Impressive technology and enormous enthusiasm

Meanwhile, the 23-year-old fills large concert halls, even the New York's Carnegie Hall, he has taken by storm, and he made good with numbers sold his CDs and he has won the Van Cliburn competition in major Texas.

Impressive technology meets with enormous enthusiasm to Tsujii - his audience to feel what he sees inside.

Difficult pieces

At the latest after the 45-minute piano suite "Pictures at an Exhibition" raises many in the audience asked how a blind person develops such difficult pieces.

Tsujii openly told that this is really difficult - but he plays for the right and left hand separately, learn in small portions - and then joins them together on stage to a whole.

How he does it well, the result is unique, it is convinced the audience at the concert yesterday.

The  Dailymotion video"Klavierabend mit Nobuyuki Tsujii in Waidhofen" (Piano Evening with Nobuyuki Tsujii in Waidhofen)

This was such a pleasant surprise.

The video was apparently shot by an amateur who has a collection on the video sharing site dailymotion.   Here is the description posted with the video:

Japanese piano virtuoso in Waidhofen / Ybbs.

A concert evening on March 16 2012.

Very intense contact with  Friedrich Rechberger (A councilman of the city) and Karl Piaty (proprietor of a Folk Arts gallery in the city)  and proceeded with the star of the evening, the exceptional artist Nobuyuki Tsujii.

The blind virtuoso was at the  UWG Liptauerbroten Farmers Market, which  seemed to him a beguiling world to relish.  Because of his blindness he was not able to see the beautiful city, but he enjoyed a visit to the the bakery Piaty, taking in the smell of freshly baked pastries and cheese spread, which was apparently some compensation. I was able to take very heart- pleasing pictures of Nobuyuki Tsujii, very clearly expressing his affection.

Saying goodbye to a lot of his admirers was obviously difficult to him, and even gave localpianist Karl  Reichenecker a personal interview.

It was a wonderful evening for the "celebrities" (who attended the concert) but certainly a very moving experience for the artist himself

Klavierabend mit Nobuyuki Tsujii in Waidhofen

Japanischer Klaviervirtuose in Waidhofen/Ybbs.

WAIDHOFEN / YBBS. A sensational piano concert by the 23-year-old Japanese Nobuyuki Tsujii gave much prominence to Waidhofen / Ybbs. That was in addition to the Ambassador of Japan Shigeo Iwatani, and the safety of senior IAEA , Masakazu Takahashi and Takeshi Ito, Director General of the "Japan External Trade Oranization" came into the Ybbstalmetropole to listen to the intense and passionate performances of the blind virtuoso.

There  was  also intensive contact of Rechberger and Karl Friedrich Piaty with the star of the evening. Together with his non-German speaking companion, Mr. Tsujii  was a guest at UWG -state farmers, followed by a visit "to smell" in the bakery Piaty Because of  his blindness, Mr. Tsujii was unfortunately not able to see  the beautiful city Waidhofen. Nevertheless, his joy was felt and so  heart-pleasing images were made. His piano colleague Karl Reichenecker was even a personal interview with Nobuyuki Tsujii

WAIDHOFEN/YBBS.

Der unbeschreibliche Duft von Liptauer (The Indescribable scent of cheese spread)

He was the star of the opening concert of the "sound room Waidhofen" Festival: Nobuyuki Tsujii, the 23-year-old piano virtuoso, a blind musician who puts his whole soul into the keys. Governor Erwin Pröll led a long team of honored familiar local guests at the acclaimed concert of Tsujii.  Among them is the retired confectioner Charles Piaty, who had established many years ago good contacts in Japan, as he also had a large presence with the Japanese TV station "NHK" .

Ambassado Shigeo Iwatani ...  the confectioner was also the best place for a social program with the artist. Tsujii enjoyed the impressions of the Farmers' Market on the Upper town square. Councillor Frederick Rechberger served as the English tour guide, pointing out the local delicacies  to the Japanese guests. Tsujii smelled and tasted for the first time in his life Liptauerbrot , and was completely thrilled. In the bakery of Piaty's son, who inherited the long established Waidhofner tradition , the musician was treated to the smell of fresh baked goods and was completely overwhelmed.

Pastries for the local recipe can also be eaten at the home city of  Tsujii, Tokyo:  Piaty is the owner of  the biggest confectionery  in the Japanese metropolis, a business relationship established a quarter century ago ,  with its recipes being  very popular there. "In Tokyo, it is sold more than Vienna Pastries" , "says the senior.

with his association with  the TV station "NHK", Piaty also got to know the security chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Masakazu Takahashi, who was present at the concert in Waidhofen. Piaty even shook hands with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce chief Takeshi.

Nobuyuki Tsujii-concert in the sound room

The soundstage Waidhofen starts on Friday in its new season: Uno e due is the motto, and as one and two are known to be three, three pianists try this year and three singers to entertain the audience with interesting facts.

The first makes Nobuyuki Tsujii. Three years ago, the Japanese won the Van Cliburn Competition in the U.S.. In itself, nothing special, nimble fingers that succeed from the Far East in western competitions - with the then 21-year-old it wasthough: Tsujii is blind. In the Crystal Room of the Rothschild palace on Friday he is his debut in Austria. (Interestingly, Bulgarian Evgeni Bozhanov -- who was a finalist at the 2009 Cliburn competition -- will also be performing at the festival as a substitute for Ingolf Wunder.

I was deeply moved by how Nobu was received in Austria - and on March 20 I posted this comment on the article on this site http://horizonte.momag.at/2012/kultur/konzerte/klaviervirtuose-nobuyuki-tsujii-in-waidhofenybbs/

"I am a big fan of Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii who lives in California, U.S.A.  Earlier this day (March 20, 2012) I had the pleasure of listening to the Internet broadcast of his debut recital in Weidhofen, through the generosity of Austrian radio station oe1.ORF.at

I have attended many of Mr. Tsujii's concerts and I own a copy of each of his CDs, and I can say without reservation that this was one of his best performances.  It is clear that Mr. Tsujii appreciated the warm reception that he received from the kind people of Weidhofen in the homeland of his beloved Mozart.  His music has never been more fluid, delicate and powerful at the same time.

Thank you, Mr. Rechberger and Mr. Piaty.  I have collected this and other articles on my site for the fans of Mr. Tsujii, here: https://sites.google.com/site/...

It is my hope that one day Mr. Tsujii will be accorded the honor of being invited to perform with the world-renowned Wiener Philharmoniker -- he has said in Japanese interviews that that is one of his dreams."
