I'm a classical music prof in my 50s, and was privileged to hear Tsujii (now 25) play a recital at the University of British Columbia last night. Afterwards, at least three men told me they were in tears listening to him, and I was struggling myself. You will see pianists with amazing technical skills and musical sensitivity, but you will never see a pianist play with such incredible joy, as if the piano was an extension of his entire being. If he ever comes to your town, BUY A TICKET FAST!!  (3 months ago)

辻井 伸行さんのコンサートパートⅡ 3/10/2013

日曜日は、お天気がイマイチと聞いていましたが、夕方近くになると晴れてきて、まるで辻井さんのコンサートを祝福しているようでした。

コンサートホールは、200人ちょっとしか入れない小さなコンサートホールでした。早めに入場したため、前から4列目のピアノの真正面という素晴らしい席を得ることができました。音がダイレクトに響いてそれはそれは得がたい経験となりました。

東日本大震災2周年ということもあって、日本人も多かったです。後ろの席の人が話していましたが、ここのチケットは二日で売り切れたそうです。手に入れられて本当にラッキーでした。

学長さんの挨拶も東日本大震災の犠牲者を悼み、被災者を思いやり、一日も早い復興を願うお話をされました。

辻井さんも最後に多くの人が東日本大震災の救援をしてくださったことに感謝の言葉を述べられていました。そして彼が世界的に認められたきっかけになったヴァン・クライバーン国際ピアノコンクールの名前の主ヴァン・クライバーンが今年の2月に亡くなったのをも悼むコンサートでもあったようです。

アンコールも一度ならず、5回も応えてくださって、本当に感動の嵐のコンサートでした。

そのアンコールの曲目であったリストのラ・カンパネーラです。

Nobuyuki Tsujii concert part 2 (March 10)

Sunday, I had heard that the weather was not good, but it turned sunny in late afternoon - seems a blessing for the concert of Mr. Tsujii.

Concert hall was  a small venue that seats  a little over 200.   Because I acted quickly, I was able to get a great seat directly in front of the piano in the fourth row from the front. That it was a valuable experience to direct the soundechoing.

There is also the fact that it was the second anniversary the Great East Japan Earthquake. There were many Japanese.  People seated behind me were talking about that the tickets sold out here in two days.  I was lucky to have gotten mine.

The <UBC> president greeted us and spoke his mourning for  the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and expressed his hope for a speedy recovery.  Mr. Tsujii thanked the many people who helped with the relief effort for the earthquake.  He also mourned the passing of Mr. Van Cliburn the competition in whose name triggered his global recognition.  Mr. Cliburn passed away in February of this year.

He played encore more than once, returning to the stage 5 times.  It was a really inspiring concert.

One of the song was Liszt's La Campanella.

200人ほどの中で前から4列目で聴けたことは最高ですね。

演奏者をダイレクトに感じることのできる場所で聴くことが出来たことは本当にラッキーでしたね。

This pianist is receiving the most attention from the world now.

It is the best you can ever do to listen to him in the fourth row from the front in a venue of about 200 people.

To be able to listen to him where you can feel the performace directly - you were really lucky.

ピアニスト辻井伸行さんをお迎えして 

３月７日から数日間にかけて、ブリティッシュコロンビア大学(UBC)St. John's College, Access and Diversity, School of Musicによる主催で、ピアニストの辻井伸行さんをお迎えいたしました。

素敵なご縁に恵まれて、主催者側として、辻井さんとマネージャーさんのご訪問のお手伝いをさせていただくことができたことに、まず感謝。

数日間にかけてご一緒させていただいた時間は、感動の連続。辻井さんとマネージャーさんのユーモアに大笑いすることも多々あり、文字通り涙と笑いにあふれる時間を過ごさせていただきました。まるで宝石箱をあけるようなキラキラとした思い出です。

そもそもなぜ辻井さんをお迎えすることができたかというと、全てはセントジョーンズカレッジの学生、Stefan Honischくんの提案により始まりました。

Stefanは現在、教育学の博士論文執筆中。彼の論文のテーマは２００９年に辻井さんが優勝を果たしたVan Cliburn Competitionについて。ステファン自身もピアニストだということ、そして彼は足が不自由だということもあり、障害と芸術について考察を進めてきました。

そして１年半前、ステファンはセントジョーンズカレッジで辻井さんを招待できないかと提案したのでした。

大学組織がイベントを開催する場合、学生が学術的に向上することが第一の目標になります。スーパースターの辻井さんをお招きするにあたり、たくさんのお客さんに高額のチケットを買ってもらい、大きなホールを埋め尽くす、ということではその意義に反します。

商業的な目的ではなく、大学のアカデミックエクセレンスのためになること。

それを目指して、今回はSt. John's College UBC, UBC Access and Diversity, UBC School of Musicによる「音楽や芸術とバリアについて」探求するシリーズ"disAbility and the Arts"のシリーズの一環として、辻井さんをお迎えすることになりました。

そのことについて快く承諾して下さった辻井さん、そして関係者の方々に感謝を申し上げます。

そのようなわけで、３月１０日（日曜日）に行われたコンサートも、ピアノソロ演奏には最適で、辻井さんの演奏を近くで感じることができる、２００席のこじんまりとしたホール。あくまでも学生のためのイベントですから、チケットの価格も学生は１５ドル、一般でも２０ドル。一般に解放されたチケットも２日間であっという間に完売となりました。

そのコンサートに先立って、３月８日（金曜日）

はセントジョーンズカレッジで辻井さんへの質疑応答のイベントが開催され、お手伝いさせていただきました。１２０名ほどの学生やお客様がいらっしゃいました。こちらは無料のイベントです。

辻井さんに対する会場からの質問を募集し、直接お訊ねして、答えていただくというイベントですが、「一日何時間練習するのですか？」という質問から「音楽はバリアフリーだという考え方について聞かせてください」という質問まで丁寧に答えていただきました。

その中で特に心に残ったのは、彼の前向きな考え方、感じ方、生き方です。

例えば、「辛いときはどうやって乗り越えますか？」という質問には「んー、あまり辛いと感じることはないんですけど。。。。」という前置き。マネージャーさんもおっしゃっていましたが、過酷なツアーのスケジュールでもいつも元気、弾きにくかったり、あまりコンディションのよくないピアノを弾かなくてはいかなくても決して文句を言わず、心を込めて演奏されるのだそうです。（実際、到着直後から最後まで全く疲れを見せず、びっくりしました。）

また、日本人として西洋音楽を演奏することについてどう思うか、という質問についての答えも、日本の音楽環境の素晴らしさ（音楽高校や大学、先生が充実していてそれらのサポートを受けられる）に言及し、日本人が西洋音楽をすることに対するネガティブな要素に対する言及はなし。そこがまたなんて素晴らしいんだと、心の中でうなってしまいました。

１０日のコンサートは３００人のウェイティングリストだということを知って、チケットを取れなかった方のために、このイベントの始めと最後にショパン、ドビュッシー、リスト、ご自身の作曲の計７曲を弾いてくださいました。たっぷり２時間、感動で胸がいっぱいのイベントになりました。

そして１０日夜。辻井さんの強い希望により、ちょうど２年前の同じとき（バンクーバー時間）に起きた東日本大震災の犠牲者に捧げるコンサート。

これはもう。。。。素晴らしい演奏に会場が感動に包まれ、異次元の世界にいるような気持ちになりました。私と夫、涙を流して感動。ちらっと見ると、UBCの学長ご夫妻も涙を流して感動。特にドビュッシーの演奏は素晴らしく、「あんなにエネルギーあふれて、胸に響くドビュッシーは初めてだった」と言っていました。

アンコールでは辻井さんが英語で「東日本大震災の犠牲者に捧げる曲です。たくさんの支援ありがとうございます」とおっしゃって、ご自身の作曲した「それでも、生きてゆく」を演奏。震災による犠牲者、そして今なお苦しみの中にいる方々への祈りの気持ちで会場がひとつになりました。

もうそこからは鼻水をすする音がどんどん増えたような。。。

その後も何度もアンコールに応えてくださり、最後はリストのラ・カンパネラでコンサートの幕を閉じました。

コンサート後のレセプションでは興奮覚めやらず、出席者の皆がいかに感動したか伝え合っていました。演奏後疲れているだろうに、最後まで皆とお話をして下さいました。皆の感動と感謝の気持ちが辻井さんとマネージャーさんにきちんと伝わっていますように。

そうそう、さきほど散歩していたら、今回ボランティアをしてくれたオペラ専攻の学生にばったり会い、「昨日のコンサートどうだった？」と聞いたら、

「it was amazing, just ammmmmmmm(目を閉じて)azing...！

あんな風に演奏する人は初めて。とても新鮮で、若々しくて、言葉なんて何もいらない、彼の奏でる音楽が全てを語っていた」と言っていた。

本当にその通りでした。

素晴らしい時間の連続で、記憶がフレッシュなうちに書き留めておきたくて、思いつくままに書きましたが、またじわじわと感じたことなどは、改めてお伝えできればと思います。

Welcoming pianist Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii

In the few days since March 07, under the auspices of  (UBC) St. John's College, Access and Diversity Program, and the University of British Columbia School of Music, I  greeted Mr. pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii. As the organizer, I first thanked Mr. Tsujii and his  manager for the visit,  and offered my help.  The time that  we had together during the next few days was a continuum of excitement. There were also many a good laughs to humor Mr. Tsujii and managers.  I was allowed to spend time full of laughter and tears, literally. It is the memories like openning a box of sparkling jewels.

The reason why I was able to pick up Mr. Tsujii in the first place: it began with a proposal by Mr. Stefan Honisch, a students of St. John's College,

Currently, Stefan is writing his doctoral dissertation. His thesis is about the 2009  Van Cliburn Competition  won by Mr. Tsujii. Stefan is a pianist Stefan himself, with disabled legs, and interested in promoting discussions about art and disability.

About a year and a half ago, Stefan proposed to invite Mr. Tsujii  to St. John's College. 

The primary goal of the  university  is to hold events that will improve student academics.  A superstar such as Mr. Tsujii can fill a large hall with audience who buy expensive tickets.  But the university's objective for the invitation is for academic excellence, not commercial gain.

To that end, we welcome Mr. Tsujii as part of the series "disAbility and the Arts" to explore "on the barrier and music and art", sponsored by  St. John's College UBC, UBC Access and Diversity, and the UBC School of Music

I have to thank everyone involved for the happy acceptance by  Mr. Tsujii of the invitation.

As such, a concert was to take place on Sunday, March 10.  The coze concert hall with 200 seats is perfect for piano recitals, where one can can feel close to Mr.  Tsujii.  Because it is an event for students, the ticket price was $15 for students,  $ 20 general.  Tickets were quickly sold out in two days after they were released to the public.

Prior to the concert, March 8 (Friday)

Question-and-answer event with Mr. Tsujii was held in  St. Johns College.  I was happy to help. Was another of about 120 students and customers. This was a free event.

Mr. Tsujii answered questions from the audience directly.

Questions range from  "How many hours a day do you practice" to "Please tell us about the idea of  barrier-free music ".   He answered the questions carefully.  In particular he left in my heart his positive thinking and feeling for life.

For example, when answering the question "Is life painful, how do you overcome it? "  He started with "I do not feel that my life is very painful".

His manager said that he is always healthy, even on a tough touring schedule.  He never complains about difficulty of playing, such as when the piano is in poor condition.  It has been said that he plays from the heart.  (In fact, from immediately after his arrival through all the way to the end of the visit, he never showed any fatigue. I was surprised.)

He was also asked what he thinks about playing Western music as a Japanese, In answer to the question, he talked about the splendor of the musical environment of Japan (with the support and enhancements of  high school and college music teachers). There was no reference to the negative connotation of the question of  Western music to Japanese.  I thought that was wonderful.

For the concert on the 10th, there was a waiting list of 300 people who did not get a ticket.  He played  works by Debussy, Chopin, a Liszt, and a composition of his own.  For two hours, my heart was full of excitement.

As the recital took place in the evening (Vancouver time) of the 10th,  it coincided with the time of the earthquake two years ago.  Mr. Tsujii strongly desired to dedicate the concert to the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The audience was engrossed by the impressive performance. I got to feel like we were transported to  a world of different dimension

My husband and I were moved by tears. When I glanced, the wife of  the president of UBC was also in tears. 

Debussy's music was especially excellent.  She said, "Full of so much energy.  It was the first time that Debussy resonates in my heart".

Mr. Tsujii said in English: "Thank you very much for your support.  This is a song dedicated to the many victims of the Great East Japan."  

"Still, we live", which he composed himself, was played for encore. The venue became one with the feeling of prayers to the people sufferings of the earthquake victims.

There was increasing sounds of runny noses. .

After many encores, he finally closed the curtain of the concert with Liszt's La Campanella.

I woke up to the excitement of the reception after the concert,

The attendees told each other how impressed they were with the performance.

Instead of being tired after playing, Mr. Tsujii spoke to  everyone until the end.

Everyone was impressed and grateful to Mr. Tsujii and his manager.

And, just now as I walked, I ran into some opera majors, one of whom volunteered his/her time <at the concert>.  I heard him/her being asked: "How was the concert yesterday?" And, the student said (eyes closed) "It was amazing, just ammmmmmmm ...! I have never seen anyone who plays like that. Very fresh, youthful. I do not have any words for it.  His music says it all."

Exactly.

It was such a row of great time.

I wanted to make a note while the memory was fresh,

So I wrote without a plan.

I think and feel, such as it was gradually, and I would tell you once again.

At the University of British Columbia, with 40 000 students.  The recital, sponsored by the St. John's College, was held  at Roy Barnett Recital Hall.

It was a rare Sunday evening concert  (starting 7:30 pm), which coincided with the afternoon of March 11 in Japan time.

The concert was dedicated to the victims of the earthquake, and to Mr. Van Cliburn who recently passed away.

For encore, performed  Chopin's Nocturne No. 8 and my own "Still, we live."

Responding to  ringing applause, I further played Liszt's  "La Campanella" and Chopin's  "farewell song".

バンクーバーのUBCにあるRoy Barnett Recital Hall （6361 Memorial Road, Vancouver）で3月10日、日本人ピアニスト辻井伸行さんがリサイタルを開催、心に響く澄んだ音色で聴衆を魅了した。St.John’s College UBC、 UBC The School of Music 、 UBC Access & Diversity の共催。

リサイタル前インタビューに応じた辻井さんは、今回の演目であるショパンとドビュッシーの曲について「どちらも小さいころから大好きな作曲家。ドビュッシーはフランスの作曲家で色彩感があり絵画的な曲が多く、ショパンは優雅さ、エレガントさ、祖国への愛を感じる作品などがある。美しい曲ばかりなので聴いていただく方にも楽しんでもらえるのでは」と話した。特にショパンについては「小さいころからよく弾いていたので、弾いていたら多くの思い出が浮かんでくる」ほどの思い入れも。

日本国内だけでなく、海外での演奏も多い辻井さんはツアーの多い日々を「時差ぼけもしないし新しい街に行くのをとても楽しんでいる。旅も好きだし食べることも大好きで日本食以外でも大丈夫なので、訪れた街ではその土地の食べ物や飲み物を試している。（旅の多い）音楽家として旅が好だというのは良かったなと自分でも思う」と笑顔を見せる。

音楽が好きな母親の影響でいつも身近に音楽があったという辻井さん。子どものころにもピアノの練習が嫌だと思ったことは一度もなく「ピアノを弾くことが大好きだし、人前で弾くことも好きなので、自分のピアノを聴いて喜んでもらいたい、楽しんでもらいたい、そう思うと練習も楽しんですることができる。やはり音楽は楽しむものだと思うので」とピアノの楽しさを話す。

自作曲も多く発表しているが、「自然の中で小鳥のさえずりや、川のせせらぎ、風の音などを聴いていると曲が浮かんでくることが多い。今後は映画音楽もまたやってみたいし、もっと勉強してソナタやコンチェルトなども書いてみたい。将来色んな方に演奏してもらえるような曲が書けるようになりたい」と意欲を見せる。

ピアノ曲に関しては「大好きなショパンをもっと弾きたいし、ベートーベンのソナタも全曲弾いてみたい。ドビュッシーももっと弾きたいし、きりが無いくらいたくさん弾きたいピアノ曲がある。まだ若いのでこれからもっと勉強していろいろな作曲家の作品をレパートリーを増やして世界にはばたけるピアニストになりたい」と尽きない希望を話す。

クラッシック以外の音楽も好きでプライベートでは「友人たちと行くカラオケで氷川きよしさんの曲を歌うのが好き」という一面も。近年増えている他のジャンルの音楽家との共演も「素晴らしい音楽家の方がたくさんいるので、良い刺激ももらえありがたいと思っている。今後も機会があればどんどん挑戦していきたい」と意欲を見せ、「ジャンルや言葉を越えても音楽は世界共通なので本当に素晴らしいなと思う」と音楽を心底楽しんでいる様子を見せた。

当日演奏されたのはドビュッシー作曲の「2つのアラベスク」「ベルガマスク組曲」「喜びの島」、ショパン作曲の「華麗なる円舞曲」「スケルッツオ第2番」「英雄ポロネーズ」など8曲。アンコールではリストの「ラ・カンパネラ」、ショパン「別れの曲」、震災への思いを込めた自作曲「それでも、生きてゆく」などを披露。澄んだ音色と曲の合間に見せる笑顔で満席の聴衆を魅了した。

日本時間では3月11日にあたる10日の夜に行われた今回のリサイタル。辻井さんはこの日の演奏を「震災で被災された方々とそのご家族、支援の手を差し伸べてくださった世界中の人々」と2月27日に逝去したアメリカ人ピアニスト、ヴァン・クライバーン氏にささげた。

３ 月１０日、ＵＢＣのリサイタル・ホールで開催された辻井伸行氏のピアノコンサートに岡田総領事夫妻が出席しました。発売二日間で完売し、ウェイティング・ リストが３００名を超えた注目のコンサートでしたが、満員の観衆に埋め尽くされ、いつまでも拍手がやまない素晴らしいコンサートでした。

March 10, a piano recital of Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii was held at the Recital Hall of UBC, attended by Consul General and Mrs. Okada. The concert generated great interest. Tickets sold out within two days of release, and a waiting list was more than 300 strong. The venue was filled with a packed crowd; it was a great concert; the applause did not cease.

A Q & A event was conducted at St. John's College of British State University (UBC) for the students and peope in the college's neighborhood.

The Sunday concert is sold out, and many people who come hoped to hear my music, so I played more than usual.

Blind since birth, Nobuyuki Tsujii was joint Gold Medal winner at the 2009 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.  An inspirational musician with a formidable technique and a natural gift for pianistic color, he has earned international recognition in recent years for the excitement of his live performances.  As a concerto soloist he has appeared with the Mariinsky Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy, the BBC Philharmonic and Yutaka Sado and the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana and Thierry Fischer among others.  Future engagements include his Carnegie Hall orchestral debut with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, his debut with the Seattle Symphony under Ludovic Morlot and a major Japanese tour with the BBC Philharmonic, Yutaka Sado conducting. As a recitalist he gave a sold-out solo performance at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium in 2011, and has also given recitals at the Aspen and Ravinia Festivals and in Washington D.C, Boston, Berlin and Munich.

In his home country he has appeared as a soloist with all the major Japanese orchestras including NHK Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Tokyo Symphony, Japan Philharmonic and Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa. He records exclusively for Avex Classics, and has made a number of best-selling discs in recent years including Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 2 with DSO Berlin, an all-Chopin recital disc, Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with Yukata Sado and the BBC Philharmonic, and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.  A live DVD recording of his 2011 Carnegie Hall recital has recently been released and is distributed by Naxos in the US and Euroarts in Europe.

Nobuyuki Tsujii’s international tours are supported by All Nippon Airways (ANA), and he gratefully acknowledges their assistance.

先日亡くなられたピアニストのヴァンクライバーンが組織したピアノコンクールで日本人で初めて優勝されたのが辻井さんです。

不覚にも昨日の生徒さんに、この情報を聞き早速調べましが、座席は皆売り切れ。メールでしつこく尋ねてみましたが、

今回は座席数が少ないそうで彼の演奏を生で聞くのは断念せざるをえません。

生徒の皆さんに集合をかけてコンサートに行きたかったのに大変残念です。

March 3 Heavy rain that lasted for three days... However, pleasant sunny morning today, like a lie! But! why didn't I catch this information! I registered for information on every classical music concert and music organization, here in Vancouver ..... had to check one by one and learned that he is coming to Vancouver next Sunday! And because it is a university event, admission is only $ 20! ! 1800 yen in Japanese Yen! ! That's right. Mr. Nobuyuki Tsujii. http://stjohns.ubc.ca/2013/01/tsujii/

Mr. Tsujii  is the first Japanese to win the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, named for the pianist who passed away the other day. I heard this information form students yesterday, and was immediately defeated: all seats were sold out. I tried to ask insistently by e-mail, I cannot but give up to hear his live performances this time at a venue with such a small number of seats.  I'm very sorry I wanted to go to a concert for the students.
