辻井伸行さん、バンクーバーでリサイタル－震災への思いを込め、聴衆魅了

March 10. Roy Barnett Recital Hall (6361 Memorial Road, Vancouver) at UBC <University of British Columbia>, Vancouver, Japanese pianist Nobuyuki Tsujii performed a recital, and captivated the audience with his inspirational clear sound. The recital was jointly hosted by St.John 's College UBC, the UBC School of Music, and UBC Access & Diversity.

Mr. Tsujii gave an interview before the recital, which features a program of Debussy and Chopin works.  "They are both my favorite composers from childhood.  In the music of the French composer Debussy, there is a feeling of colors in a painting.  Chopin is elegance; his work contains his love for his country.  I hope you will enjoy listening to them; they are just such beautiful pieces.  I have played Chopin since childhood.  Playing his works bring many memories to mind."

Mr. Tsujii gives many performances and he is constantly on tours, not only in Japan but also abroad. "I really enjoy going to a new city and I do not get jet lags.  I love Japanese food, but I enjoy eating while I am traveling. I try the food and drinks in each city.   I think as a musician, it is good to travel a lot."

Under the influence of his mother, Mr. Tsujii grew up loving music.  "When I was a child, I never once was told that I have to practice on the piano."

I have always liked to play in front of people, and I want people to listen to my piano willingly.  I enjoy practicing as well.  Music is something to enjoy."

He has composed many of his own songs.  "I enjoy bird songs in nature, and the murmur of rivers.  Songs often come to my mind when I listen to the sound of the wind, etc. In the future, I also want to do film music.  I also want to study more  and write sonatas and concertos.  I am eager to be able to write works that many people would like to play in the future."

Regarding piano music, he said, "I do want to play more Chopin, my favorite.  I also want to play songs of Beethoven sonatas. And I do want to play even more Debussy.  There is a lot of piano music that I want to play.  Since I am still young, I want to study and expand my repertoire to include the works of various composers, to become a pianist who travels around the world to perform."

In private, he also likes music other than classical music, saying "I like to go to karaoke with friends, singing a song of Mr. Kiyoshi Hikawa."

In recent years,  he has also increasingly performed with musicians of other genres.  He said eagerly, "Since there are a lot of great musicians, I'm thankful to get good stimulation from them. I want to continue to be challenged more and more, if there are opportunities in the future "  He seems to really enjoy music.   "I think it is really great that music is a universal language and it even goes beyond genres."

On this day he played 8 works, including Debussy's "Two Arabesques",   "Suite Bergamasque" and "Pleasure Island"; and Chopin's "Scherzo No. 2", "Brilliant Waltz", and "Heroic Polonaise".  For encores: Liszt's  "La Campanella", Chopin's "Farewell" etude, and "Still we live", his own composition to commemorate the earthquake.  He charmed the packed audience with his clear sound and a smile between songs.

The recital took place in the evening of the 10th, when in Japan it was already the second anniversary of the March 11 earthquake.  Mr. Tsujii dedicated the performance to "the people around the world who reached out to the families and support those who have been affected by the earthquake" and to American pianist Mr. Van Cliburn, who passed away on February 27.

バンクーバーのUBCにあるRoy Barnett Recital Hall （6361 Memorial Road, Vancouver）で3月10日、日本人ピアニスト辻井伸行さんがリサイタルを開催、心に響く澄んだ音色で聴衆を魅了した。St.John’s College UBC、 UBC The School of Music 、 UBC Access & Diversity の共催。

リサイタル前インタビューに応じた辻井さんは、今回の演目であるショパンとドビュッシーの曲について「どちらも小さいころから大好きな作曲家。ドビュッシーはフランスの作曲家で色彩感があり絵画的な曲が多く、ショパンは優雅さ、エレガントさ、祖国への愛を感じる作品などがある。美しい曲ばかりなので聴いていただく方にも楽しんでもらえるのでは」と話した。特にショパンについては「小さいころからよく弾いていたので、弾いていたら多くの思い出が浮かんでくる」ほどの思い入れも。

日本国内だけでなく、海外での演奏も多い辻井さんはツアーの多い日々を「時差ぼけもしないし新しい街に行くのをとても楽しんでいる。旅も好きだし食べることも大好きで日本食以外でも大丈夫なので、訪れた街ではその土地の食べ物や飲み物を試している。（旅の多い）音楽家として旅が好だというのは良かったなと自分でも思う」と笑顔を見せる。

音楽が好きな母親の影響でいつも身近に音楽があったという辻井さん。子どものころにもピアノの練習が嫌だと思ったことは一度もなく「ピアノを弾くことが大好きだし、人前で弾くことも好きなので、自分のピアノを聴いて喜んでもらいたい、楽しんでもらいたい、そう思うと練習も楽しんですることができる。やはり音楽は楽しむものだと思うので」とピアノの楽しさを話す。

自作曲も多く発表しているが、「自然の中で小鳥のさえずりや、川のせせらぎ、風の音などを聴いていると曲が浮かんでくることが多い。今後は映画音楽もまたやってみたいし、もっと勉強してソナタやコンチェルトなども書いてみたい。将来色んな方に演奏してもらえるような曲が書けるようになりたい」と意欲を見せる。

ピアノ曲に関しては「大好きなショパンをもっと弾きたいし、ベートーベンのソナタも全曲弾いてみたい。ドビュッシーももっと弾きたいし、きりが無いくらいたくさん弾きたいピアノ曲がある。まだ若いのでこれからもっと勉強していろいろな作曲家の作品をレパートリーを増やして世界にはばたけるピアニストになりたい」と尽きない希望を話す。

クラッシック以外の音楽も好きでプライベートでは「友人たちと行くカラオケで氷川きよしさんの曲を歌うのが好き」という一面も。近年増えている他のジャンルの音楽家との共演も「素晴らしい音楽家の方がたくさんいるので、良い刺激ももらえありがたいと思っている。今後も機会があればどんどん挑戦していきたい」と意欲を見せ、「ジャンルや言葉を越えても音楽は世界共通なので本当に素晴らしいなと思う」と音楽を心底楽しんでいる様子を見せた。

当日演奏されたのはドビュッシー作曲の「2つのアラベスク」「ベルガマスク組曲」「喜びの島」、ショパン作曲の「華麗なる円舞曲」「スケルッツオ第2番」「英雄ポロネーズ」など8曲。アンコールではリストの「ラ・カンパネラ」、ショパン「別れの曲」、震災への思いを込めた自作曲「それでも、生きてゆく」などを披露。澄んだ音色と曲の合間に見せる笑顔で満席の聴衆を魅了した。

日本時間では3月11日にあたる10日の夜に行われた今回のリサイタル。辻井さんはこの日の演奏を「震災で被災された方々とそのご家族、支援の手を差し伸べてくださった世界中の人々」と2月27日に逝去したアメリカ人ピアニスト、ヴァン・クライバーン氏にささげた。
