This week's calligraphy word is shimasango ananasu for those who want to practice their calligraphy. Ananasu is a Japanese word for bromeliad, and shimasango means patterned. The two together, shimasango ananasu, describes the appearance of my painting model this week, taken from my own garden. It is a scarlet star bromeliad. Shimasango is written in hiragana, and ananasu is written in katakana.
Here is a relatively simple sketch of a scarlet star for practice.
The leaves of scarlet stars are mostly smooth and mono-colored in photos from the web. My model, however, is a plant from my own garden. This is what they looked like.
