From a print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798 – 1861). See discussion.
There are two Japanese words this week for those who want to practice their calligraphy. Both are in hiragana, one of Japan's phonetic syllabaries. The first word is fukumame (lucky beans).
The next word is Otafuku, the fat-cheeked, female noh mask.
This relatively simple sketch of a soybean (daizu) plant is for practice.
The writing in the painting says, "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!" ("Demons out! Good luck in!").
