Calligraphy, Sketches & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The kanji characters below represent tanpopo, the Japanese word for dandelion, for those who want to practice their calligraphy.

Sketches

The sketches of dandelions below represent different parts of the plant. The numbered items represent in sequence the life cycle of the blossoms.

Demonstration Painting

Usually in paintings with leaves, the body of the leaf is painted first, followed by adding veins. In this painting, I paint the most important veins first. Then, using those veins as guides, I paint in the body of the leaf. Other veins are added later as needed. It seemed that the unusual shape of the dandelion leaves would be easier to render with this approach.
