Week 18

 Demonstration Art

From a surimono by Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849). See discussion.

Calligraphy, Sketches and Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The kanji word this week is kani (crab) for those who want to work on their calligraphy. It is very complex, so before presenting the kanji in full, the following breaks it into sections for practice.

Here is the full kanji ideogram for kani (crab).

Sketches

Here are relatively simple crab sketches for practice. The top one is a Dungeness crab. The lower one is a bright orange crab.

Demonstration Painting

The poet's name for the haiku included with this week's painting is Yabumoto Sekiho. Like all proper haiku, this one has a reference to a season. Shigure is a type of off and on drizzling rain shower that can occur in the late summer through early winter. I usually like to make seasonal references that match the season our class is in at the time, but this one is an exception. As for putting it together with a crab, my excuse is that other Japanese artists have done the same thing. Enjoy.
