Calligraphy, Sketches & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

There are two kanji words this week for those of you who want to practice your calligraphy. The first is yuki (snow).

The next kanji word is matsu (pine tree).

Sketches

This relatively simple sketch of a pine cone and needles is for practice.

Demonstration Painting

A painting technique used this week has ink on one side of your brush and none on the other side. Rinse your brush clean. Load sumi on one side of the damp brush and leave the other side without ink. Apply the brush to the paper so that half of the stroke leaves sumi on the paper and the other half none. The result should be a "hard" edge on the sumi side of the stroke and a "soft" edge where the sumi fades away.
