Week 16

 Demonstration Art

From a painting by  Sesshū Tōyō (c. 1420 – 1506). See discussion.

Calligraphy, Sketches and Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The Japanese passage below is for those who want to practice their calligraphy. The first character is kanji for tsuru (crane). The hiragana to in the middle means "and." The final character, kanji again, is matsu (pine tree).

Sketches

The relatively simple crane sketches below are for practice.

Demonstration Painting

My pine needles are a bit large, heavy, etc. Try to keep yours more modest. When I painted the background forest, I did each "tree" with a single stroke, including over the mother crane. It was pretty faint in my original, but when I scanned the painting in, the strokes appeared on top of the crane. I had to do a little cleanup. You need to be very light with your background strokes or use two strokes each, skipping over the crane.
