Week 15

Demonstration Art

From a painting by Sesshū Tōyō (1420 - 1506). See discussion

Yama (Mountains)

The three main shades of sumi are very important in this week's demonstration painting; light (tanboku), medium (chūboku), and dark (nōboku). Most of the strokes are mokkotsu (boneless). Note the tenkei, the little boatman, in the foreground. Most of the other small foreground elements are tenkei, too. They help to enhance the feeling of the immensity of the mountains in the middle ground and background. the main subjects of the painting.

Here is the kanji character for yama (mountain) for those who want to practice their calligraphy.
