Demonstration Art

Calligraphy, Sketches & Demonstration Painting

Calligraphy

The Japanese word for plumeria (purumeria) is written below in katakana, one of Japan's phonetic syllabaries, for those who want to practice their calligraphy.

Sketches

The simple sketches below are for practice. The first one shows plumeria buds.

This next one is of plumeria leaves.

This is a 5-petaled plumeria flower. The spiral pattern is easy to see.

This final sketch combines all three elements on a stem.

Demonstration Painting

Prepare to paint by making three shades of sumi. You will also need to have colored inks (gansi) ready. I used two brush sizes. The larger one was used for leaves and stems. The smaller brush was used for lines. You do not have to copy my painting, but whatever you do, have a complete composition in mind before starting. Know what elements will be in your painting and where to place them. Making preliminary sketches in advance helps.
