Demonstration Art

From a print by Toyonari Yamamura (1885-1942). See discussion.

Calligraphy

For those who want to practice their calligraphy, the kanji characters below are the word ebi (shrimp).

Shrimp Sketches

The shrimp line drawings below are relatively simple sketches for practice and fun.

Demonstration Painting

My shrimp painting uses a combination of mokkotsu-hō (boneless) and senbyō-hō (lines) painting techniques, but mokkotsu-hō is the most important. In particular, I use a special variation of mokkotsu-hō called kataguma, a shading technique. First load the brush with either water or tanboku (light sumi). Then flatten the bristles and spread them out a bit. Next load one side of the bristles with a little bit of nōboku (dark sumi). The bristles stay flat when you apply them to the paper. Kataguma is used for the various segments of the ebi. I demonstrate how to do this in class.

Here is my demonstration painting.
